Cpu without thermal paste?

i built my pc some months ago, but i didn't have any thermal paste because i forgot to order it with the parts. My buddy said it not really a big deal, and the computer works great, but should I apply some thermal paste anyways?

Although if your using the stock cooler it probably has paste pre installed

2. NEVER spare on cheap things at anything ( eg you can buy some thermal paste on ebay for like a pound or less, quality ones are around of whooping £5), as usually big things go wrong if someone spare on the cheap bits, I know it by experience

Yes add some thermal paste. It makes is easier for the heat-sink to conduct the heat generated by the CPU. Result will be a cooler CPU with longer lifespan.

Slap your friend, you NEED thermal paste on that cpu. Without it, it won't last you very long.

 

Also, the stock cooler, or any cooler you buy should come with it's own paste, either in a small tube/sachet, or pre-applied.

For Xbox builds I used some ebay stuff, but when I bought new PC with new cooler for £200 all together, I was like " Why would I spare 2 pounds on a thermal paste?" and got some decent, but not too extreme

are you sure your stock heatsink didn't have pre applied pads on it? 

when you buy a CPU that comes with a heatsink it comes with little grey strips on the bottom which is thermal paste. 

if you put on a bran new intel heatsink then its most likely it has paste on it. 

 

if this is the case i wouldn't worry about it. but if the heatsink was used or 3rd party like a hyper 212 then i wouldn't worry about it although this does seem odd since most all retail heatsinks 3rd party or intel/amd come with paste either pre applied to the bottom or in a tube in the box. 

 

i'm thinking his friend knew the heatsink had pre applied pads and said don't bother changing it too other 3rd party paste.

which is exactly what i would tell a customer using a stock  heatsink as well.

There's no reason to not apply any given the low cost, but if you need/want to get the computer up and running while you wait for some being shipped to you...it's fine

@Henrikdosvik - Yes, you need thermal paste, so like the others said; go slap your friend for saying it's not a big deal. Aside from that, it's most likely what ever CPU cooler you are using (especially if it came with the CPU) already had thermal paste pre-applied. (Did you look at the surface of the cooler where it contacts the CPU when you built the PC? Did you see the grey/silver stuff on it? ). And if that is the case, then you don't need to apply new thermal paste, unless you want to. 

 

What sort of temps are you seeing on your CPU?

Other than stock coolers I have not seen an aftermarket one with preapplied paste. Coolermaster, Be Quiet, Noctua, Zalman, etc all come with a separate tube.

it suppose to allow even contact with the cooler and CPU

 

without it the heat will have no way to go = overheated CPU

Off topic but I reseated my cpu cooler and I didnt know that I was supposed to reapply the paste, so I reinstalled it.

 

After stress testing my computer and playing some games, it didnt go above 70 during the stress and not above 60 while gaming.

 

Do I need to reapply it?

will the disinfectant wipes be enough to clean it? or do i need isopropyl
