Yes it is slightly better but for the money, I will choose the 290x every time.

What do you do with all your graphics cards and how do you have enough money for all of them? Do you make a video and then sell them or something?

no, it has more core, but it has a lower clock if i remember correct

You see how it says 'Playtech' on the bottom? Thats a big tech company in NZ and thus I get the cards to review through them.

Also, there are quite a few differences between the 290 and 290x but im too tired to get into the details but in basic the 290 is a 'cut-down' 290x chip (Hawaii's), the same way a 780 chip is a cut down version of the 780ti chip (GK110's), they have the exact same memory and memory speeds, but on the reference models the gpu speed is 50mhz higher on the 290x, the 780 & 780ti have the same amount of memory, 3gb, but different memory speeds.

yea i looked it up

 

the 290 has 40 core groups enabled

 

and the 290x 44

 

so 10% more cores, but the core clock is about 10% higher on the 290

 

good job AMD :D

the reference model 290 goes to 947mhz and the reference 290x goes to 1000mhz.
