Buying RAM - what to choose?

Guest

I'm about to buy new RAM modules to my new 4790k Haswell system, but I'm not sure what to choose.

So far I'm semi-decided on Corsair (as I trust the brand) and 16GB in total. But should I choose Vengeance or Dominator? 1.65 or 1.5v? And how fast?

I've watched Linus' videos on memory speeds, but that doesn't help me much on this. Also it seems the only results I could find on Google were in relation to older generations of i7-processors.

Thanks in advance.

RAM speed dont matter on Intel systems unless you are running a AMD APU system

you can run perfectly well with 1600MHz low CAS RAMs at 1.5v default

Dominator are for the bling factor and they cost a lot

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Kingston HyperX Fury ram is pretty good, plus the white heatsink looks amazing!

i trust kingston because i used their ram before and had no problems with it

If you're starting fresh, always go with the lower voltage kit. 1.65v ram stock is horrible in 2014 while 1.5 is standard, there are 1.35v kits if you wish to go a little lower. Unless you are using an APU, standard 1600mhz stuff will give  roughly the same frames as uber expensive ram.

I have a question regarding this RAM. Most 1600 RAM seems to be CL9, is there a reason why this RAM is CL10. Will this affect gaming? I only seem to be able to find people talking about higher CL's at much higher MHz.

you won't see difference between cl9 and cl10 in gaming, the only time you will see a difference is in muti tasking or something like that between cl9 and cl10

I don't mind spending a little to get great quality and fast RAM. Also so I have the oppertunity to OC later if I want to.

APU? Amd Processing Unit?

AMD CPU that has a decent iGPU

the iGPU uses system RAM as VRAM

so that is why AMD need fast RAM of 2133MHz

Accelerated Processing Unit = APU

Just for a common scenario I would have. May have a game open, stream software, a few web tabs and music (Roughly 7GB in use). Is the CL difference not going to make a difference in this situation?

the difference is like in nano seconds

you wont feel it

LOL! Sorry, but "APU" stands for "Accelerated Processing Unit"

Ah. Thanks :)

I guess I'm not then since I have the i7.

But, I would like to be able to OC the ram a little if I want to later on.

What would be better - 1866MHz 1.5v or 2133MHz 1.65v ?

any decent RAM will OC

but to hit that speed

you may need to overvolt

check if the mobo you are using supports 1.65V RAMs

It does, the complete list of supported modules is here: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/Z97-DELUXE/Z97-Deluxe_DIMM_QVL.pdf

ok pick the 2133MHz and OC it to 2400MHz

2133Mhz 1.5v doesn't come in 8GB modules (or isn't supported), and I'd rather have 2x8 than 4x4.

Thus my question: What would be better - 1866MHz 1.5v or 2133MHz 1.65v ?

Hi guys,

I will be getting an asus hero or ranger board for an i5 4690K CPU. Will it work with Kingston ddr3 cl9 1333 ram? I have this on my old system. I have 8GB worth so don't want to waste money if it will work. Gpu will be gtx770 or gtx 780

Thank,

K.

it will work but your new ram will only be running at 1333MHz as it will match the old RAM speeds
