Phone overheated. Cable, battery or connector's fault ?

dmegatool

So I plugged my Lumia 520 to charge it (in PC). Couple of seconds later I noticed the smell and unplugged it... It was VERY hot. Mostly the usb cable connector but I guess that's just because that's I pulled on. The phone was still working. I even swapped out the battery when it reached 0% and the phone is still rocking. I just can't charge it.

Sooooooo. What caused the overheating ? A faulty cable, battery or usb connector on the phone ? I just want to know what to throw out the window. I'll probably get it replace so I'm wondering if I still can use the battery and cable...

When I charge my phone, it gets very warm. Try charging in short bursts. Charge for a few minutes, rest, then another few minutes. Tedious, but probably avoids overheating.

Good thing it didn't catch fire.

No. But I though that there isn't much in a usb cable. It's pretty simple isn't it ? We're not talking cheap chinese wall charger. I don't know...

It's written in the manual that you can plug it in the computer to charge it. That's the way to transfert pictures too. It's not prohibited to plug it in a computer

Well it doesn't charge at all now so... bursts ain't even an option. If I would have to do that, I would consider my phone to be broken though xD

Funny note, the one year warranty expired 5 weeks ago. I'm that kind of guy. The electronic just fail on me without any reasons. I've been through 4 PS3, all with different failures. Yep, I'm that guy.

That a USB cable becomes warm at the end is normal. Even the iPad Air plug gets warm to medium hot if I charge it. But the phone should never gets that hot. What was smelling the USB cable or the phone? Also, check the 1 Star ratings of the cable if you bought it online.

Actually, your charger could give out a higher amp

I know. That's why I'm surprised it hapenned while plugged in my computer... Anyway now it's all dead and even the charger doesn't work.

I'm sending the papers to my credit card assurance to get it replaced. Gotta love what comes with the credit cards now.

You can even use the 12 watts ipad charger for a phone. It only takes as much as it needs. Or do you mean that the usb port didn't deliver enough power?

Why don't you RMA it?

Oh that sucks. In Germany we have a 2 year warranty by law.
