Qs about Dell U2414H and an older 5850 graphics card

Nyph
Go to solution Solved by flibberdipper,

Should be fine. But I am not sure about the ASUS monitor, but it is probably good, being from ASUS.

Probably silly questions, but I'd rather ask than assume and be wrong.

Anyway, I have an old 5850 graphics card, it'll be 5 y/o this year and it has a DisplayPort connection, would it be fine hooking it up to a Dell U2414H via DisplayPort? I'm just concerned about any potential compatibility issues with an older DisplayPort on the card and presumably newer one on the monitor.

Also, slightly off-topic, but the other monitor I was considering was the Asus PA238Q, does anyone know how it compares to the U2414H?

I just got a u2414h last week, I had a few issues at first with it but after changing some settings in the Nvidia control panel I have it all sorted out (mostly my fault, not the monitor at fault). I'm pretty sure your DP should be OK, it uses DP 1.2, but only if you manually go into the OSD and enable it (it's disabled for me for some reason, I only use it with HDMI).

Coming from some LG TN panel I must say I love this, games and films look so much more colour-rich and strangely enough, sharper. It's really a great monitor and I'm glad I got it. Hoping to get another two in the coming months to try some multi-display gaming! :)

The U2414H is an awesome monitor, specially for games, input lag is almost non-existent,

PA monitors from Asus are usually outstanding for color work, but they are inherently slower.

You will game on it just fine, I'm using an older U2312HM, beside games that require quick reflexes like CS: GO (where 144Hz monitors benefit), I don't see any problem using IPS for gaming, its color is gorgeous

So there'd be no compatibility issues between DisplayPort 1.2a (which is what I think the monitor has) and 1.0/1.1 (which is what I assume the card has given its age)? Sorry, just want to make sure, I mean at worst I could use a DVI to HDMI cable, but I'd prefer to save the HDMI ports for consoles.

Shouldn't be a problem.

The main difference between DP 1.0 and 1.2 are higher bandwith, and with it, the ability to run higher resolution displays, like 4K.

Just wanted to say thanks for the answers and that I took the plunge and picked up the U2414H today. It looks amazing and works fine with my card using DisplayPort, my only issue with it is the touch buttons are a little temperamental, but other than that it's fantastic.

Thanks all.
