Below ambient cooling

This post is just wanting some additional information.

I have looked at building my own peltier unit and doing it that way but then realizing the power consumption, it really turned me off. As well as the balancing act you have to do to achieve the best cooling difference between hot and cold sides.

I haven't done much research on a phase change unit but would like some input on the subject. Thanks in advance.

As for my rig, using a CM bench with an asus Formula-Z and a fx-8350. Want to go to the highest possible overclock.

I've always had the thought of just getting a window AC unit and just making some sort of manifold to run the cold air into the computer. Window units aren't too terribly expensive.

LN2? If you want to go down that road.. :P

You could also just go with an overkill CPU loop. 480 UT60.

I've done a lot of Vapochill cooling in the past, but in the end it's still expensive electricity wise, while having your core at just under or just above freezing point. And keep in mind, condensation!!!!!

There is a way, without the problem of condensation (like with the ac unit you mentioned).

It's just plain watercooling but instead of using a radiator, one uses a showerhead to spread out the water stream and you blow ambient air on it. This makes the water cool + evaporate which in the end cools it below ambient.

but don't expect huge results.

I linked a picture to show the buildup.

It's quite cheap though.

Phase change cooling units can run you from like $600 to $1500. the peltiers are cheaper but need proper wiring, hope you do proper research.

Yea I wish I could do LN2 but I can't find a place in Germany that sells LN2. I moved here a while back but besides the point.

Yea I know about condensation. I will be insulating the mobo when benching. I don't know what i will use yet, too many choices. What do you suggest?  Remember reading about nail polish, Vaseline, dragon skin, conformal coating or LET. Along with neoprene foam.

What do you mean by proper wiring? Do you mean using a dedicated variable 12V power supply, or what?

Yes i am. Also, condensation happens when the cooling is lower than the ambient, so how do you plan to combat that?

Well I am not sure yet exactly what I will use to insulate the motherboard....I have been searching for ideas and what other people are using. What I have found is that some are using nail polish, vaseline, liquid electric tape with frost king or neoprene foam.

Vaseline is the most common but to me this is more trouble than it is worht unless you have one of these...1 2 or 3 but then for the price i thing a good air conditioning unit would be better.

Yes maybe it's not worth it to you but I'm the one here that wants to do. Anyways, do you know of any brands for the variable 12V power supply?

No i don't sorry. Most people use a normal PSU molex striped connection with a voltage regulator or make shift ones like these two loons.

Ahh okay, saw the controller one before and found it cool. Been reading up on the idea but I think that is after I get my feet wet in peltier cooling. If you could recommend some good peltier units, that would be extremely helpful! Yes I have found some but I don't know if they are good. Just some ebay ones, could be good or not. As far as I know it was rated for 400W.

They all look the same to me but the size and wattage handling. I am sure the ones you found on ebay are similar if not exactly the same as the ones i know of.

Would something like this be a good power supply? From your link to Loon 2, he showed something like this Or would it be better to buy a regular ATX PSU? I'm thinking the variable PSU would be better.

Ahh okay. But i think I want to go further than what the CM V series could achieve.

If you are using your peltier in a closed case which has only one opening for one PSU, i would recommend you use a normal ATX PSU which has more power than your system needs and then take one of the molex connectors and strip it and use that to a voltage regulator but if you are using an open test bench then the PSU on ebay will do nicely.

I hope you understand that doing this WILL void your motherboard's warranty and i am sure condensation will be a huge problem unless you have one of those motherboards that is targeted to LN2 like most of ASUS's ROG series or Gigabyte's GA-Z97X-SOC Force LN2.

This is for benching, so it will not be on all the time and the sound is not an issue as again it will not  be on all the time.

I have the Asus formula-Z. Old but it's what i have for now. And its on an open bench so I'll go for the ebay one.

So that Asus board is fine?

Yes, just use your preferred condensation preventative measure.
