Is it still worth getting Star Citizen early?

MrTomnus

Since it came around I've really like the look of SC. I was just wondering if it's still worth it to be an early adopter. I was thinking of going for the $40 pack with beta access. What will that get me? What is currently available to do? I heard the dogfighting is being worked on.

Also, will it be possible to buy new ships in the future? And how long would it take to save up to buy one, if anybody can answer that now?

At this point it's probably best to just wait for the actual release. You're not getting any great rewards for being an early adopter right now, so you might as well wait it out and see if it actually lives up to your expectations.

Is that going to put me at any sort of disadvantage? I'm a bit tired now of buying a game and everyone being maxed out with amazing weapons etc that destroy noobs.

I don't think we can actually tell where the game is going right now, so I have no clue. Most of the gameplay is still a concept and not implemented in any way, who knows how progression will work in that game. Another reason not to buy it early if you ask me, if they pursue a really unfair business strategy that would make it easy to buy power or that requires hundreds upon hundreds of hours to make the game any fun I wouldn't invest in it either.

Haha, good point. I guess buying it on the 2nd/3rd day won't be bad :)

I think the standalone singleplayer Squadron42 will release before multiplayer. That should give you lots of practice.

If you decide to get a package now you can get an alpha access that will allow you to play arena commander. This means that for now you'll get a hangar with your ship and access to multiplayer matches in couple of game modes. It's a great way to get used to controls and see if your system can handle the game. Of course everything might change with time but from my point of view even at this point it's worth it. Next week there's a big patch coming out with lots of improvements. The big new feature is racing.

As for new ships you'll be able to get everything in-game later on so it's up to you if you wanna spend some cash now for a better ship and support a game as it's being made or work a little harder in the game and get the ship you want.

To sum up, maybe you don't get any super advantage by buying game at this point but you can already plat it and take part in a super cool social thing that SC has become.

Peace.

If you interested in the idea of what they are making then back the game with the $ amount you feel is both affordable for you and what you think your interest is in the game.

In my case I bought a 325A to get me started.   But will buy additional ships and/or trade to see the other ships when you can fly them.

I'd recommend the Arena Commander Starter ($45) or an Aurora LN with Arena Commander Module ($45 + $5).   but you could go cheaper. (Aurora MR $30 + AC $5)

At the very least you can tryout some basic MP with other players or fight AI Bots in a survival mode right now with racing on the way.

then at some point you'll get an SP game with Squadron 42 and the MP Persistent Universe MMO game later; since you paid to back the games development.

Ive been wondering the same thing right now.

I want to get involved in SC but i'm wondering if its worth it right now gameplay wise.

will i be able to enjoy anything other then concepts/ art ect at this point?

Also Is it a big deal as to which package you buy ? or will you be able to earn other ships easily later?

I'm not even sure what package id buy right now. I plan on bringing a few friends to the game maybe 5-8 friends so these multi crew ships will be a possibility

for me later on but i doubt most of them will early adopt and do the beta thing unless their is lots to do.

I was thinking id like to be a merc early on and take on jobs for money , i was thinking about getting one of the 300 ships for that roll do you guys think thats a good path? if so which ship in the 300's?

If i do start playing i expect myself and my pals will try to join the LTT Squad aswell.

for a merc, the 315 325 or the avenger, which while not a 300 series is in the same price range.

you can buy ships after the game comes out in game.

and dfm, is out, so you can fly, and racing is coming soon.

Arena Commander is fun to me. Racing will add something else to do when it comes out soon.

You buy into a ship for a price that you wish to back the game for.  you can earn anyship in game later when the Universe releases.  you are just getting a nicer head start of a ship for backing the devs.

Differences in Variants is the starting "Stock" gear it comes with.

Hornet might be a good merc ship since its most suited to a dogfight right now in AC  (Ship Escorting as a merc could be a thing).  But a good pilot could tip that advantage.

300 series will be a good multi role ship that can do whatever you want it to.

Maybe get a 325A.    it won't win in a head to head with  a hornet though.  boom-n-zoom is how to win.  I died a lot before I understood this. lol

BNZ is a good tactic in lots of flight games .

I used to BNZ a lot in Warthunder with my fw190 and some heavy fighters.

so hornet may be better for merc escorting ect ,, but the 325A will be faster? .

will they both have capability of taking down heavier ship's or will one have more strength in that department?

i've looked at a few things but i'm not sure whats faster or has more weaponry yet usually thats stuff i figure out in game lol.

@solarflare

325A is faster and more maneuverable while the hornet is is a straight up close range fighter.

325A has a bed for long flights.  That will matter at some point i'm sure.

Doubt either could take out something like a constellation by itself.

325A should be sufficient no matter what you do with it.

Probably a good choice for solo or even a small groups of highly skilled pilots.

Personally see hornets being only useful to pure dogfighter players or large orgs.

are their any single player ships that are larger and more heavily weaponized then these 2 ships?

or are all the larger ships as you say like constellation's multi person crewed units?

well you have the hornet, but it's a short range fighter, no cabin to speak of, no bed, no head. for heavier with simalar functions. you're looking at the cutlass, but that kinda needs 2 people, the avenger, which has a bed, there are a few others, but you can't buy them yet.

I think this is where alot of people get on the fence when buying SC , with the $ involved in these packages people are not sure what to do.

I want something i can definitely multi roll and still do a protection roll for merc.

But if other games are indication of what people do I dont want a ship that cant fight larger vessels because pirates are likely to have both light and heavy ships.

Warthunder had alot of good pilots that would take on heavy's and use them as Zoom and boom type fighters .. which means the small fighters could out manuver them but the problem was they have far more firepower , a rear gunner and were often faster in a strait line with alot more armor.

so if you didn't get a critical hit they would just tank your shots and then demolish you on a pass.
