School AND Gaming Laptop for under $1300

So I'm looking into getting a laptop for under $1300 that would be portable enough for school but also good enough to manage some of the latest pc games out there with a decent fps.

No i3, maybe i5 but preferably i7 as i will be doing video editing too.

1080p Full HD.

Decent battery life, more than 4-5 hours without gaming.

15 inches cause it needs to be portable.

About 750gb or 1tb for the hdd.

Has to be 8gb ram.

Looking into getting the Lenovo Y50 but I just need a couple more options if there are any out there that might be better for the budget. Thank You.

The Lenovo Y50, the Lenovo Y50, and the Lenovo Y50 are all great options.

I like the first one, but the second and third are also very apealing!

Like others have said, the Y50 will probably meet your needs, but I'm unsure about the 4-5 hours of battery life you're looking for. I think some people have said the Y50's battery is a little anemic.

Poor battery. :( Need to get it some iron supplements.

I just bought the Lenovo y50 4K yesterday. I decided it works for me, and 4K is pretty awesome; I went to the Microsoft Store and toyed with it for a little. I almost bought it there, but the total was $200 more versus on newegg. Unfortunately Newegg's price is now $150 more than yesterday's price. So I got an awesome deal, but now it'll cost you $50 more to get it in the MS store, which might be a better option.

I'll let you know what I think about the performance and quality of the laptop. Obviously the screens will differ if you choose the FDH over the UHD

I am planning to only go for the FHD, you think the 4K is the one draining the battery? Anyways, please do let me know.

Did they say poor on battery even if it's not used for gaming? since I'm only gaming when it's plugged.

Sager?

A Sager will work.

OP @emvii try building up this machine to suit your needs. I suggest the 7260ac wifi card and IC Diamond for the thermal compound. You should be able to get a SSD with your price range too; good luck! If taking 16GB RAM take 2 x 8GB sticks instead of 4 x 4GB.

I don't know the battery life but with optimus it ought to easily pass 3 hours. Here is a video showing your expected gaming performance.

I suggest using fn + 1 for max fans when doing CPU-intensive work however; they'll help. Raising the back of the machine off the table a little helps too if you really need to beat the heat. Folding 1 block of 2 ply toilet paper and putting it under the rubber feet at the back of the machine is more than enough.

Next, the mobile i7 CPUs will clock up by 800MHz over their base clocks as long as they're not overheating or running out of power entirely. So the i7-4710MQ that is stock with that machine at 2.5GHz will run at 3.3GHz on 4 cores, 3.4GHz on 2 cores and 3.5GHz on 1 core (depending on how many cores are in use) on that machine as long as you don't overheat. Overheating being something like 92+ degrees celcius. Hope this helps!

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Ultrabook for school. Desktop for game.

Lets be honest, carrying around a gaming laptop on campus SUCKS. They're generally bulky, battery life is around 1-2 hours (Plug-ins are not as common as you'd think at school), depending on where you're at even some 15.6" laptops barely fit in lecture hall desks, and gaming on school wifi SUCKS.

We all know Desktops are way better to game on anyways. Unless you're going to a lot of LANS.

+added benefit without a computer that can run games at school you may learn more...

Uhh... my SLI laptop gets 2 hours on battery and doesn't have Optimus/Enduro. I think an optimus/enduro laptop would get more than 2 hours. Usually those things get 3-4 hours or more, with a 6-cell 76KWh battery.

And this is assuming i7 in it; an i5 or an APU system could likely get a bit more.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

A lenovo y500/y50 is far from heavy I carry one to school everyday.

I easily get 3hours of battery on the y500, the y50 is even a bit longer.
