Gaming headset under $100

Rexchaos

Recently looked at the Siberia V2 Frost blue's but since my friend has it, I'm in no interest to copy him.

Currently I'm interested in the Kingston Hyper x Cloud gaming Headsets, but i read on a review that it has 5.1 virtual surround instead of the newest 7.1. What would this mean in terms of sound quality and usage?

Although this doesnt have an inbuilt USB sound card, would it be sufficent? and does possessing an USB sound card help?

Also just interested, what would the Siberia's be? As per 5.1 or 7.1?

Thanks.

Go with the Skullcandy SLYR's they are effectively a lower priced Astro A 40's with a slightly better mic.

Virtual surround is a joke. the number just indicates the number of speakers. 5 speakers+ 1 woofer. With virtual surround 5.1 or 7.1 makes NO DIFFERENCE.

The USB sound card really doesn't do much of anything. it is a gimmick. You are 110% fine without one. The audio Chipsets on any newer mobo will easily handle what you throw at it. Any extra sound device isn't necessary unless you are looking for audiophile grade sound or do any audio production. And even then, audiophiles don't use sound cards. They use DAC and AMP combos.

Your best bet is to get some decent headphones as the audio signature and tuning is MUCH better.

Ignore this person because he said Skullcandy. Get a pair of ATH-M50s and then buy a mod mic or another kind of external mic. Gaming headsets are plastic garbage. I learned this the hard way.

I mean i don't know about sound that much but are the Hyperx clouds really that bad? They use Qpad technology which is working with beyerdynamics for their headphones/headsets. And the Ath-M50's w/ a modmic would be around 200 more or less. That surpasses my budget of $100.

Btw it says that the Hyperx cloud is like an remodelled Qpad Qh-90. thoughts on that? Same quality for less etc.

Other external mics exist too. It might also help if you tell us how far you can stretch that $100 because if you're willing to be a bit more flexible with your budget.

Budget would probably be like $120 tops around. To be honest i understand the need of good headphones/headset but if its for gaming i don't believe that much money should be spent. Also i'm not a audiophile or whatever but i would want good sound for an reasonable price.

Okay, so if you're not an audiophile but want good sound then you should therefore listen to an audiophile or in my case; "audiophile in training"?

I have ordered the HyperX Cloud Headset and I am waiting for it sometime this week. I have heard many good things about it and I think it is a great deal for the price.

Edit: I have used a 7.1 headset and tbh, I wouldn't say the experience was very pleasant. It definitely adds to the immersion, but if you plan to also talk with your friends on like skype or ts, it gets really annoying and it makes them sound like "gods"( ikr xD), so it makes it kind of a deal breaker for me...

If you are looking for something with excellent sound quality, that is also amazing for gaming for as little money as possible, take a look at Superlux headphones such as HD668b and HD681 EVO. They are less than $50 but easily beat any "gaming" headset in quality in the budget range of $100.

I mean its out of my budget at the moment. a modmic with an ATH M50x would be close to 200 if not more. hence the the topic being under or borderlining it like 120 or less.

I heard about them before. Specifically from Teksyndicate's Logan. But the thing is if paired up with an cheap mic it would break easily while if you went for a modmic it would be around 80ish/90. As for quality wise i believe Superlux's aren't as durable as Hyperx's and i don't know about sound wise though. Superlux + Modmic would be equivalent of a hyperx cloud but more price? Less quality? Sound not sure.

Personally i have a ton of Razer mouses, but as for headphones/headsets i believe it isnt Razer's expertise. Razer's products are like an gamble, you get a good one you use it for along time, while if you get a bad one it's going to be an awful experience. Also Razer Kraken's reviews arent really that bright.

Yeah i also believe that the price point is incredibly sweet. I'm still listening to reviews though, but apparently Qpad technology, i mean it looks exactly like the QH-90's from Qpad and with an two year warranty. Decent time.

Superlux headphones are as well built as any gaming headset. A cheap microphone doesn't necessarily mean it breaks easily. The Zalman ZM-MIC1 is pretty damn solid. And if you go with an external mic, if it does break you still have working headphones and only need to replace the mic instead of the whole headset. :)

They sound excellent, much better than the common gaming headsets. You can check some reviews at Head-fi.org for HD 668b and HD 681 Evo.

Do you have them personally? How are they lasting so far if you do?

Yes, I have the HD681 EVOs. I've had them for over a year now and they are still in excellent shape. I wrote a review of them a month ago, too.

Just saw the review, i noticed they are 681 Pro or Evo and not the regular 681's. I do admit that i would get the 681 simply due to aethestics, more pleasing quality and looks, though on amazon the price of it is almost twice as much as the regular 681. Since you mentioned superlux, what would the EVO have that would make me pick the Evo and not the regular 681 or the 668b ?

The EVO are updated 681s. Many people criticized the original 681s for having too harsh highs which was fixed in the EVOs. The EVOs also come with much more comfortable velour pads; on the originals you'd have to buy them separately. 668b is not that much different but offers slightly more bassier experience.

How would the 681's compare to the Audio-Technica Ath-m20x or the m30 ?

I have not tried the M20x or M30x, but if they are anything like the M50x, then the Superlux headphones would be better for gaming due to more open design and wider soundstage. The Audio-Technica headphones might be better for portability, though. I don't really see many people recommending the lower end AT headphones. Sound quality wise, my guess would be that the Superlux headphones are better, based on reviews I've read on the Internet.

Still i feel like im paying a little too much for an pair of plastic headphones. I live in the states, in USA, so i believe Superlux goods are more expensive than the 28E you brought it for. Currently its for around 55 on amazon since i live in United states, and i feel like if i pay even $10 more, theres more options to explore.

In the $50 to $60 range you could get Pioneer SE-A1000 or CHC Silverado. They're much more expensive than that normally but lately they've been super cheap.
