Total OC noob needs help... alot of it... :P

Tro

So i never got to OCing anything really, and now that i got a *decent* CPU cooler, i kinda want to OC my AMD FX-6300 a bit.

So as you can see in my signature, i have a Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO, and it cools pretty good for the low price.

I need a *very clear* guide on how to OC, someone that goed slowly and explains stuff, i tried watching Linus' video's and it went too fast for me.

I have an Asrock motherboard, so it would be awesome if that board was used in the guide, or atleast the same BIOS. \

Links to clear guides are appreciated, and also i would love some advice on where to stop, like, where is the limit that my CPU can handle with this cooler.

As i said i'm an extreme noob so i can use all the advice possible :)

I hope this is in the right subforum, not sure if this is supposed to be in Troubleshooting or whatever.

Thanks to anyone that wants to help me.

Same CPU and cooler here and I was a total noob when I overclocked my CPU.  I used this guide and it simplified everything: http://www.overclock.net/t/1348623/amd-bulldozer-and-piledriver-overclocking-guide-asus-motherboard

EDIT: Just noticed that this is specifically for Asus motherboards and you have an ASRock one.  Do you know the model name of your motherboard?

This will help you out quite a bit.  I have an AMD FX 6300 in my son's pc and for the life of me off the top of my head I don't remember how I overclocked it but I got it to 4.2 GHz on air with an aftermarket cooler with no voltage changes.  I want to push it further but am afraid to play around with voltage settings. :S

I know though with the links from the website above you will get loads of information and reliable information.  Post there too for more help.

Ok one step is to disable all power saving features on your motherboard.  Disable Turbo Boost and Cool and Quiet and things like that while trying to find what you can overclock your cpu to.  After finding a stable overclock these things can be turned back on.

This thread below on LTT was also helpful despite someone saying it was not for noobs.  If you read closely at some of the suggestions in the OP's initial post there is quite a bit to help you there.

I'll look around :) I asked on the overclock forum too, hopefully they can help too :)

Tro maybe tonight I will take a crack at overclocking my son's AMD FX 6300 cpu with that guide from Linus Tech Tips and let you know how it goes.  I got to write all that down first.  Yes you heard me right.  I have to write the guide down first as I have no printer with ink to print that off.  Eh still have to shower and get out and get some exercise today plus have something to eat so eh maybe I won't get around to pushing things with his cpu til Tuesday evening.  I don't know right now.  Anyway will chime back in here before 2 am EST 8/26/2014.

Oh damn haha. Every guide i looked at so far is way to complicated to me and i have no idea what they're talking about :P

Print off that LTT Guide and go into your BIOS and find where these things are located and look at them and learn how to adjust them or turn them on and off and then don't save the settings.  Just get used to being in the BIOS.  I think that is what I would recommend first.

I think with the AMD FX 6300 if I remember correctly we are to push the multiplier as high as we can take it without messing with the FSB and when we hit a wall we increase certain voltages.  All the time doing all this we are supposed to turn off features like Cool n Quiet, Turbo Boost and some others.  I think that is the easiest way to explain what is done with an AMD FX 6300.

I don't know what a multiplier or FSB is, but i'll check it out. I can watch linus' guide on my phone right? So i dont have to print it.

Well better learn what those are before doing anything.  Get a feel for what is in the BIOS.  Heck I still don't feel comfortable about everything in there and need to ask more questions.  It is ridiculous that I haven't messed with voltages to increase my son's overclock by now but I worry about killing the cpu when just by overclocking using the multiplier I got what I needed really to make it a better gaming rig.  By just moving the multiplier I gained 800 MHz I believe it is.  Heck Turbo alone will get you to 4.1 GHz which is a 600 MHz gain.

I used this guide for my FX8350. It's not the same board you have but he explains what the options are and why you need to change them.

You know Tro the thing is if we get 4.1 GHz from boost how much are we really gaining in terms of real world performance in games by pushing the cpu further?

I was just looking up overclocking stuff and found specifics on the board I have in a video but have yet to change anything on the pc.  Thing is the pcs in my household are overclocked but no voltage is added at all to get what they are at and so to lower the lifespan of the cpu is it really worth it for what I will get by squeezing out 200 MHz from the  4.3 Ghz I already have with the AMD FX 6300?  The same question is asked about my air cooled i5 2500k .... Is it worth it?

Never really thought about it that way... You're right though. It's probably not worth it.

I am still going to do some overclocking and benchmarks and see what the deal is when comparing 4.1 GHz to whatever overclock I can get.  I am just going to look over the BIOS for now then tackle some overclocking later.  Peace.

Why is printer ink so expensive?  I don't know how long it took me to write down that guide but I am guessing an hour.  Now onto writing some information that I saw in a video that was specific to my motherboard.  Not sure if I mentioned it but I have the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3.

Well Tro back from killing myself out on the basketball court.  Now hydrated and had some Chunky Soup so I hope the brain is ready to go to try and do some more overclocking.  I may stop though at some point if it doesn't get quieter upstairs as my brother lives above me renting the top of this house and right now it is pretty loud and hard to concentrate.  At some point he will go to sleep before I do for sure.

Ok well so far so good using info. from the LTT poster's guide I was able to boot into Windows without any issue at 4.51 GHz at 1.5 volts so now to lowering the voltage to where I can't post anymore.  I am now at 4.51 GHz at 1.284 volts and I am still able to boot into Windows without any issue.  In the BIOS it showed the cpu temp at 20 degrees Celsius.  That seems crazy but as I lowered the voltages the temps dropped and I understand that less volts means less heat but I still wonder if temps are being read right.  Eh I also saved two profiles thus far in the BIOS in case the next one I try doesn't go well.  Biggest question now .... What I wonder is how far can this AMD FX 6300 be pushed on air?  I wonder what the record is for an overclock that is stable on air?

Update:

I have been running Prime 95 with the harshest test for cpus with the AMD FX 6300 set at 4.51 GHz with 1.380 volts on the cpu. So far for over 10 hours it has run perfect. When I tried to do this test with the cpu at 4.51 GHz and 1.284 volts it immediately showed errors in the test. So the next step will be letting this test go for another 14 hours I guess.  Next test after that will be to see if I can get it to be stable with less voltage.  I forget what the maximum voltage one should use with an AMD FX 6300 so going to look that up now. GL Tro with your overclocking and please share here what you have tried.  Btw I saw a feature in my BIOS that would have allowed me to print what was in the BIOS.  Pretty cool feature but I don't think it works with 64 bit operating systems.

I'm not sure if I'm going to do it.
