LH Labs Geek Out 450

NCIX: http://bit.ly/1prSaNy

Amazon: http://geni.us/3mRN

The Geek Out 450 from LH Labs is a small USB DAC and amp that seems like a compelling value - but it comes from the company who brought us the $1000 "10 gigabit light-speed" USB 2.0 cable... Is this another product made exclusively for chumps?

Exactly. My friend wasn't too happy when his father clogged the car pipe and closed himself in. Carbon Monoxide poisoning I think.

Will an AMP + DAC help with gaming headsets? E.i. If I bought a 7.1 surround sound gaming headset. If I plug it into a Amp and DAC, will it help me?

I wouldn't buy this DAC purely on the basis of the company sounding like a bunch of morons (for lack of a better PG13 word). From the shots of their website shown in the video, it's clear that they're going for a "cool" and "pally" attitude towards their public relations, which is something I absolutely detest. I'm not their mate, it just makes them sound like a bunch of hipster idiots.

3:19 - Um, yeah. Yer gonna need a driver. No worries!

No! I've never even met these people, so what makes them think they can talk to me in such an uncouth and informal manner? This is supposedly a business deal, but language like this turns the whole thing into an absolute farce. Perhaps a more appropriate way of saying this would be:

Windows users will require a driver, since Windows is not fully compliant with devices that support asynchronous USB Class 2.

Making up words is also something this company's PR department is guilty of. WTF does "awesomification" mean? In all honesty, it makes them sound like a bunch of five year olds who haven't learned how to use English properly yet. Also, "awesomifier". Makes them sound like complete and utter idiots.

Also, the product doesn't look very good.

2L is a great source of audio. Foobar can be tweaked to deliver small gains in playback quality, mostly by working on jitter. There's a lot "voodoo" in HiFi for both the analogue and the digital end, but some of them do seem to work.

Based on experience, well-recorded and mastered high res audio is easier to pick out over standard res formats when in a well-treated quiet room and using a good (and properly neutral) HiFi system. A neutral sounding HiFi can be more revealing as consumer headphones tend to be "voiced" so that they don't irritate the listener.

I've been in the high res bandwagon since SACD/DVD-A launched, so I might be a bit biased. I switched to high res downloads in 2009.

Linus,

Perhaps you can make a review of the latest version of JPlay (to compare with JRiver and Foobar using different paths) to see if you hear a difference between "bitperfect" players. :)

I completely agree. And at $200, there are a plethora of other options.

Best of luck finding a sound card supporting native DSD128 at that price. 32/384 is difficult enough.
