Should I buy windows 8.1?

Sauron

Hey forum!

At the moment windows 8.1 pro is available to me on g2a for 13.30 euros. Are there any reasons not to buy it (aside from the forsaken modern interface that I'll instantly mod out)? Would it cause compatibility issues with anything like older games etc? (still love my quake 2 ^^)

Would I basically have to reinstall the system from scratch and thus loose all programs? (it's not a problem but I'd like to know since I never upgraded a system before)

Also, with Windows 9 coming out soon, should I just wait or upgrade when 9 comes out?

Thanks for any input!

I dont have quake but I know my 8.1 pro has no problem with the original Command & Conquer. I would say go for it.

Dude at that price, get it. If you're going to mod Metro UI out anyway it will probably run better for games.

It's best to do a fresh install when upgrading Windows. But personally i'd say wait for Windows 9 if you can do what you normally do with your current OS.

Personally, I would just wait a bit for Windows 9, it sounds like we're pretty close to it now.

Not now. Wait for W9 to be released. It will most likely be better than W8/8.1.

For 13.30 Euros definitely get it, I upgraded from 7 to 8.1 Pro and I love 8.1 more!

A fresh install is better and you'll probably have to re-install programs I'm guessing because whenever I wipe windows and install again I have to do that >.>

EDIT: A lot of posts saying wait for windows 9, I guess you could do that but then you'll probably have to pay 80 Euros or whatever compared to 13.30. :P

true, but it's 13 euros and for that price even 6 months of use are worth it imo... and maybe I can get a discount on 9 if I upgrade to it from 8 just like win8 ws cheaper for those who had 7, right?

Well yeah a fresh install usually means reinstalling the programs ^^ but I'm not concerned for that as I have all my data on a hard disc whereas windows is on an ssd, so it would just be a matter of reinstalling steam and the core programs I have the installers for. I can backup the douments folder so I don't loose any game saves or anything. The question was more a "would I get a worse experience?" than anything else

Yeah 13 euros is pretty cheap, nobody is forcing you to upgrade to W9 right after. It depends what that money means to you, if you have a job and not too many expenses than it's fine to pay 13e even if you're going to replace it by W9 in a few months (you don't know that anyways), if you're on a tight budget then it's best to wait for W9 since your W7 is probably still fine. :P

I personally would get it, W9 will probably be a lot more expensive than that and 8.1 is still a great OS, a decent upgrade compared to W7.

Yeah windows 7 is fine, but at the moment 13 euros is almost free for me, I have a good amount of saved money available and no big expenses on the list and yeah, nobody forces me to upgrade immediately. Might wait for a price drop :) (also dx12 won't be a thing on win7 unfortunately)

I would wait, for the simple reason that I see problems with windows 8 and 8.1 in terms of performance. It has a weird delay stuttering feel to it whenever you open anything that just plain pisses me off, I'm more of a windows 7 kinda guy, heck I'd rather use windows vista personally, but that's just my opinion and apparently no one else on this forum have noticed these issues especially on lower end hardware like an atom.

Well that G2A thing isn't actually legit.

There was a discussion about it on toms hardware, the summary is someone contacted microsoft about it and they replied that g2a and the resellers on there are not authorized  microsoft resellers and what they're actually selling are actually msdn keys which are not really available to the general public.

I think it was on a wan show, couldn't tell you for sure where that came from. It's part of the whole "we aren't updating windows 7 anymore" thing.

So a key from g2a wouldn't work? From what I know it's a legit site

Well depends on how to adapt to Win 8.1. For me the change was nice, things seemed more fluid and generally looked nicer. On the side I've read Win 8.1 uses less RAM which is beneficial as a whole and maybe to some games. I'd research that G2A thing as someone pointed out though.

You may have a worse experience, but people generally blame the metro UI for that - personally I think it's nice to have large buttons and you can just use the mouse wheel to scroll through it. Also the "charm" bar is useful as you can just use that to search quickly for an application you want and it saves you time. I guess it similiar to the Win 7 search bar in the start menu, however.

It would work, but the sellers are not authorized microsoft resellers so that could make it possibly illegal - I would suggest you drop a quick mail to microsoft tech support and come to solid conclusion

Ok so it seems the only way is through here:

http://support.microsoft.com/contactus

Click on technical support and sign-in with your microsoft account, if you don't have one, there is an option to create one. Let me know how it goes.

I tried to contact them but apparently at the moment the service is closed, I'll give it a try another day. Thanks for the help! :)
