Is 480p phone screen THAT bad?

makaronidi
Go to solution Solved by ShadowCaptain,

480p and 4:3

My suggestion is to drop it as your daily driver, and use it strictly as an N64 emulator.

Haha this

I have a Sony Xperia L, with a screen res of 480 p and a 4.3 in and I think it is good enough, why is everybody saying it is so bad?

Yeah, exactly. Why is it such a big deal to have at least 720p screen on a phone nowadays (or even 1080p / 1440p / 2160p)? IMO 480p screen for a 5" device is enough

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

It depends what you;re using it for.  If you use it just for texts and calls then it's fine.  If you want to enjoy high resolution video on your device then a higher resolution screen is superior.

i have a 4.5" 480p screen, and i never thought "ouch, this looks bad"

but i'm not a resolution freak, i don't slap my phone 2 inches from my face to look for pixels, i'm just a chill user

480p is fine for normal use like web, chat, photos, videos without pretending to view in super extra high quality (but in the end, seriously, who cares? it's just for the bigger e-peen)

Have you tried using a device with a proper resolution and a generally good display yet (S4/S5/M7/M8/G3/Nexus 5/iPhone)? Going from a low.res to 1080p is really a noticeable jump. Not to mention that those low resolution panels are without exception pretty crappy (especially in terms of viewing angles/color reproduction) anyway.

Higher resolution does not mean that viewing angles or color reproduction would be better. There can be screens with low-res but in other ways they'd be great, and then there can be high-res displays where the only good thing that they have is sharper image. Though modern phones' manufacturers focus mostly on resolution, they do make them better in terms of color and viewing angles too.

I have seen it. Doesn't seem too big of an improvement. I mean yes, there is a difference, but not big enough to be a dealbreaker for me.

Though I haven't used a small 720p screen for long. Only got to use one for few minutes. My own phone has 480p screen, and right now I don't see a point in upgrading. It's fine for me. Your experiences / opinions might be different.

Higher resolution is still better, especially when going from VGA to HD. I'm pretty sure the worst 1080p phone screen will stil be better than the best VGA screen.

Dayum dude. You just burst my bubble.

I got so hyped there for a second.

I did think a 4:3 phone was ridiculous, but then I thought it's from Sony. The company that thinks 'making things waterproof' is still a thing.

Everything is good enough if you think about it. A 480p monitor, gaming on medium even low settings, 30fps, membrane keyboards, all of that is "good enough", it works; but do you really want that?

It's like saying a 3 cylinder car is good enough. It is good enough for most but enthusiasts will want the most out of their cars so they can't settle for less
