Canon T3i as webcam, so to speak.

Quest

So I have my girlfriend's freshly acquired Canon T3i DSLR camera set up to my computer using the EOS Utility software. However, there is that little annoying auto focus box hanging around like an unneeded or wanted hangnail. I am perfectly fine with simply screen regioning it into OBS, although I would prefer to directly feed the video into OBS. I would assume I would need an encoder of some sort, and to do that live is a hassle. Oh well.

Anyways, any methods to get rid of the AF box while using Live Viewer through the EOS Utility software? Any input would be much appreciated, as I am at a loss after a little under an hour of fiddling with it.

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

Check the camera manual. Usually there is an option to hide the focus box, or set it to always focus on the centre of the image.

Umm, is it really a 500 dollar waste to use it as a webcam?

First, it was on sale. $364 after tax, with battery, 18-55mm lens (very beginner, I know), and the body, of course.

Second, it's my girlfriend's primarily, as I mentioned. She does not use it often, I will be streaming the majority of the ArcheAge beta, so why not put it to use for something while she works her anus off for three days of 12 hour shifts?

Third, that's not relevant to the OP.

Fourth, it is used for other things. She didn't take a year of photography and graphic design, and I didn't take the equivalent of four years of video production, to get a DSLR and use it as a webcam.

Thank you for using one post as the catalyst for all of your assumptions.

I have set it to Manual Focus, manual exposure, manual white balance, etc. Everything is on manual and (hopefully) perfectly set. I've personally never bothered to look into getting rid of the box, as it didn't bother me, in all my four years.

After browsing the menu options, I can't seem to find an option to simply get rid of the AF box. Thank you though. I'll re-check a couple times, I may have just sweeped over it.

Acquired, not bought.

@OP On Nikon at least, you can disable it by hitting the "info" (marked with an "I") button on the top of the camera. It cycles through what you see while in Live View.

I'm not sure if that compares to Canon though, hopefully it does!

Well... some people like to argue that video is bad for a DSLR sensor.

I'm not sure whether it's true or not, but just saying :P

OK, I'm sorry. I'll leave now.

Really? I hadn't heard that. I will look into it, though, as I would be using it for extended use.

Thank you though. I will look into the "/" thing for Nikon and if it translates to Canon.

It's probably not true. Or if it is, it'll take so long to actually damage the sensor I'm guessing it doesn't matter.
