Corsair RM 850W?

Enthusiast83920

I chose the Corsair RM 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply for a build, but I've been told to avoid this PSU due to low quality caps. I've been advised to purchase the XFX PRO Series 850W instead. What are your thoughts on this XFX PSU, and should I purchase the XFX instead or are there better alternatives?

For reference purposes only, here are some of the other components of the build.

Cooler Master Storm Trooper ATX Full Tower Case

Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor

Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler

ASRock Z97 EXTREME6 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (up for discussion)

G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory

Western Digital BLACK SERIES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 6GB Superclocked ACX Video Card

@Cokeman beat me to it, you should get the evga g2 850w psu

I didn't tell him to get that. Everybody says to get that PSU. It drives me crazy. There is nothing wrong with the RM 850

except that the evga g2 has a much longer warranty and is usually the same price or less than the rm850. And the evga does have better caps.

The RM uses special caps that don't coil whine since it has a zero RPM fan.

I have the RM650 and can vouch for it's quality!

It never coil whines and is always stable and super quiet.

I'm not even going to talk about the stupid fanboyism on either side. Both are absolutely awesome PSUs. I would choose the G2. But I wouldn't argue against an RM.

I have the rm650 myself, but the g2 is a better deal, especially at the same price or less as it's warranty is significantly longer.

Bullshit. CapXon and Ltec secondaries were chosen for being cheap, not avoiding coil whine. You are gullible.

The caps are still perfectly fine. It is still a great PSU. They are both great.

i fixed it. It messed up because I accidentally deleted the last bracket (and apparently replaced it with an "s]". And I'm using tappatslk, which for whatever reason erases te woke reply when I go to edit something, so it takes a bit of time to correct posts as I have to copy the text I wrote then requote, paste, then recopy the whole thing then edit the old post.

The low quality caps are low quality, although they were chosen for locations that aren't stressed very much, so it should live out the 5 year warranty.

Still, if you have the opportunity to choose a higher quality unit that performs better and is cheaper, the choice is obvious.

They aren't low quality caps... Don't exaggerate it. They aren't the highest quality, but not highest quality  low quality.

Once again, I still recommend the G2 here but the RM850 is a great PSU as well.

The RM 850 is not bad, In fact it's good. The SuperNova G2 is just better.

The RM is a good PSU, but for the same amount of money, you can get better: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850

I'm using OklohomaWolf's comment in the RM850 review as my source.

Gag. Most of the output filtering on this unit uses Ltec capacitors. That's not tier one or even tier two for me... that's just about bottom rung. Remember that great big deal about ten years ago where some company started using a flawed electrolyte formula, and they started failing left and right? That was Ltec, right in the middle of it. Now, they have improved since then, so it's not like we're dealing with the old days when Fuhjyyu equipped Antecs often meant you'd be buying a new power supply in a year. Chicony knows their business well enough to make even crap capacitors last forever. Heck, they're just like Delta in that regard, who also uses Ltec a lot.
