Looking at Laptops

Stuff_

I am finally ridding myself of my Acer 5534, thank God.

I am looking at laptops, and I like the price/performance of the Lenovo Y50 (core i5 version). BUT I keep reading these negative views about the screen quality.

On the other hand, I have read that you can find a nice IPS replacement for around $70 and just replace it with be done with that.

What are some other gaming laptops? I'm not looking at a SLI full-on gaming laptop, I have a desktop. I just want a laptop that works with my school work, and can game (little bf4 here, fifa 14/15 there) while I have downtime.

Also looking to keep it at or around $1,000.

Any suggestions would be awesome.

I'd personally go with the lenovo y50, I too have heard some negative comments about the screen, I think a few/most of them said that it was slightly yellowish or something like that, but that's not that big of a deal as it should be able to be corrected with software.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

I had the same thoughts. I also saw a revier on amazon list a replacement IPS screen part number, in case a swap was warranted. I am not as picky as a lot of people would be with the screen.

I saw the Asus ROG laptops. But they are a good $200-300 more than the Y50, but with very similar specs. It's hard for me to justify paying more for that. Are there any Asus ROG that are i5's instead of i7?

No, please no, not for BF4, he will overheat the CPU and die. ASUS laptops do not have very good cooling compared to Clevo/Alienware/MSI. They did a few years ago maybe, but not now.

I can find you one, though BF4 is a bit of a stretch... size requirements? Want a 15" or a 17" etc?

mobile i5s are all dual-cores I think; would kill your BF4. An entry-level i7 should work ok for ya.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Are you familiar with the Asus G750 series? It's bulky, but has some of the best cooling available in a gaming laptop.

wtf? They have some of the best cooling of any laptop on the market. Nothing has changed. Where are you getting your information from...?

Mine: How about the Clevo P370SM?

Or the Alienware 18? And its undershot

We could try MSI GT70 dominator. Look at that hugeeee fan

Now let's look at ASUS's G750JW. And the other side. And their heatsinks.

No, ASUS does *NOT* have the best cooling of any laptop on the market. They have "better than people like Dell/HP" cooling. They don't trade blows with Clevo/MSI/Alienware anymore really, as far as I've seen.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Funny how you're judging cooling performance by fan size. Just proves your inexperience.

Alienware? Seriously? Please don't be one of those people.

Also notice how the ASUS ROG notebook has separate cooling for the CPU and GPU, unlike MSI where both are combined into one heatsink.

Also it seems like you don't know how to read properly. Notice how I said 'some' of the best cooling. If you knew English you would understand that this does not mean ALL of the best cooling.

With the Clevo and Alienware you linked, you realize you're trying to compare the cooling systems in the G750 with SLI laptops, right? Of course the cooling system is going to have more fans and heatpipes, it has to contend with an extra GPU. Ultimately, you're comparing a laptop with a base model costing ~$1200-1300 to ones that are over $2000.

As for the GT70, of course the fan is bigger than the G750, it has to cool both the CPU and GPU. And if thermal benchmarks are any indicator, the G750 with its dual fans performs better as a result. That's probably the reason why MSI is coming out with their more expensive GT72 series, which switches to a dual fan configuration.

EDIT: Admittedly, my earlier post saying "best cooling available in a gaming laptop" should probably have said "best temperatures available in a gaming laptop".

I didn't say anything about fan size except for the big MSI fan. Which still cools exceedingly well. I was more pointing to the heatsinks and such.

Also, they are not in the tops of cooling. They're better than the low-end manufacturers like Acer/HP/Sony/etc. They're not in the tops, which is my point, and Haswell i7s are a blast furnace and the 780M (FAR LESS 880M) is a very very hot GPU. BF4 is a CPU-toasting simulator. For me to recommend an ASUS to anybody wanting to even load that game up as a joke would be like me giving someone the OK to drink juice laced with small amounts of poison. You want it for regular use? Sure. You want it for medium-weight use? Sure. You mention BF4, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Paranautical Activity, Borderlands 1, Far Cry 3 or any other of the "we willl we willl toast your hardware!" games to me, and you are going to get something with proper cooling.

If you don't want to believe me, you go right ahead. I put clear views of the heatsinks and internals of all the machines and you can clearly see the ASUS is lacking; from both sides. They're also hard to maintain. If you want anything past a low-end laptop, you need to be able to access and clean it fairly often. Something the ASUS is bad at doing.

With the Clevo and Alienware you linked, you realize you're trying to compare the cooling systems in the G750 with SLI laptops, right?

Clevo P177SM-A single GPU

Alienware 17

Clevo P157SM-A

Clevo P150SM-A (mostly the same as above)

Clevo W350SS (usually ~$1000)

Couldn't find a good pic of the Alienware 14; so here's just one of the wonderful airflow underneath it

And the ASUS G750JW's airflow vents aree this

Anyway. If you don't care about what I'm trying to say, and you still want to get an ASUS OP, you go right ahead. I'm not going to fight it any more than I just did.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Yup, and those cooling systems look pretty comparable to the Asus G750, (except for the W350SS, which I realize is a cheaper laptop). Even the total area for the vents don't look too far off. (http://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/Notebooks/One/K73-3N/boden1.jpg) Believe me, I like Clevo laptops - hell, I ended up buying a Clevo P170SM-A over the G750 (mainly because of price and maintenance).

I said it before in my earlier post, but I'll say it again - I should have said that the temperatures in the G750 were some of the best, not that it had the biggest fans and most heat pipes. (My mistake). But I very much disagree with the assertion that the cooling system in the G750 is bad. Thermal benchmarks prove that, I should think.

Seriously, I don't think the ASUS cooling system sucks. I simply think that it isn't good enough for Haswell, which is EXTREMELY hot, or any kind of game that heats up the video cards a lot. Like I said, if the OP didn't mention BF4 and was just sticking with LoL/DoTA 2/Fifa 14/etc, I wouldn't have even chimed in about the ASUS. But this forum (and a whole lotta people in general) consider ASUS to be one of the best you can get, and according to NBR (and the general lack of love for any of the new ASUS models over there), they aren't. And as I did point out too, they are much more difficult to access stuff inside.

If I recommend stuff to someone I take no chances. Any of the games I mentioned is a warning flag for heat, and BF4 is the king of the hot CPU. Would wanna make sure that (especially for his price) he gets something that should definitely hold him over.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Well this thread turned interesting :P

I've been looking up more laptops today, and I've come down to about 3:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834233049

This Gigabyte looks interesting, but no reviews and I'm having trouble finding any elsewhere. Is it a brand new product?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152558

Also looking at this MSI GE70. Though people do explicitly say, in the reviews, that the laptop gets very hot during gaming.

And lastly, the good ol ASUS ROG G750

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231630

I'm really unsure which to get :(

The games I would be playing really would be D3, BF4(maybe, unless it'll just fry my cpu) and Fifa 15 (when releases). Fifa 15 has a much higher recommended pc specs, so it should be more strenuous on the system compared to fifa 14
