Gtx 770 on a 1440p monitor worth it?

tihor29

I have been mulling over buying either a 1080p ips monitor such as a dell ultrasharp or spending a bit more and getting a xstar dp2710 which is 2560x1440p. My problem is that I'm not sure how good a gtx 770 is at running a 1440p monitor. Also what would the lifespan of my graphics card be until upgrading to sli or a new one? Is it better just to get a 24inch ips 1080p. Thanks.

Keep in mind that benchmarks show ultra/max settings. You usually get much better results, even with high or just few settings changed at ultra.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Also keep in mind that they overclock all their hardware.

Also keep in mind that 2gb's of vram will limit you in future titles. You're best off selling that 770 now before the 800 series releases.

Watch this video and see for yourself:

I haven't seen that video before. So, umm, does this mean that if you had 2 of them, then it's waaaaaaay overkill for 1080p?

One should be able to run modern games at high to ultra settings at 1080p.

So, in theory, two should be fine for a 1440p monitor?

Two would be plenty. But if you haven't bought either yet I would suggest a single card solution rather than a dual card. Gtx 780/780ti should do it.

I already have two. My reasoning behind it is kind of silly but here goes. SLI looks badass, I don't have issues with it, my PC had to be modded/personalized, that was in the design brief. If I were buying the cards now, I probably would get 780s since they're slightly cheaper. But when I bought the first 770, the 780 was still like a $700+ card here in Aus, way more than I was prepared to spend

SLI looks dope. Which 770s do you have?

Well interesting story here. I had one EVGA GTX 770 Dual SC. So, dual bios card. I figured having the option to screw around with custom bioses with safety could be nifty. I couldn't get a second, I had to get a standard EVGA GTX 770 SC w/ ACX cooler. Now, I had an EVGA Pro SLI bridge, which the led didn't work, due to the dual bios card. While my case is being modded, I transferred my parts into another case, and mistakenly put the dual bios card on the bottom. Now, for some reason, the SLI bridge lights up, go figure

I do intend to watercool at some point, again, for the modding/customization aspect. I'm already prepared to receive shit-tonnes of hate from online forums because unfortunately, forums like these are sadly filled with people attitudes like "780 of GTFO, 4k or GTFO"

Technically a single GTX 770 is already pretty overkill for the games I play the most, being Starcraft 2 and Dota 2. So, whatevs I guess

I have a 280x 3gb which is pretty close to a 770 with a 1440p monitor and all games run nicely. BF4 for example I can get around 96 fps consistently and on high settings It stays around 60fps
