Samsung to pay hefty fine for misleading the US Government

snowComet

Samsung was fined $2.3 million by the US government, for misleading them to believe the devices they acquired from Samsung is manufactured in the US, or countries where the US has trade agreements, as the US government was forced by its policies to only purchase products build from these countries. The devices Samsung sold to the US government were originally believe to be made in Mexico or South Korea, which are covered by the trade agreement. But than these products were found to be made in China, a country where the US don't have trade agreements. Thus the Justice Department charges Samsung for violating trade agreements, and Samsung's American division agreed to pay the government to settle these charges.

The US government was alerted about this by a whistleblower, Robert Simmons, who is a former Samsung employee, and he is entitled to receive a portion of the settlement, but the amount has not yet been decided.

Honestly, why would the government believe for a second that a Korean company would have their products manufactured in the US?

They didn't, read it again. Trade agreements count too. They probably told the government it was made in South Korea.

Frankly I'm not surprised though. Samsung is an extremely corrupt company.

To be fair, the US government misleads the US citizens... and the US government. It was a dirty thing to do, but the fact that it was the US government in particular that was mislead doesn't really cause me additional concern lol.

Don't trust any company to be above board, they are all nasty when they think the public aren't watching.

EDIT: not trolling just making a point that its big business practice and not a reflection of one company because they all do it. Even LG HTC Nokia MS etc etc etc.

Don't be daft. Nearly every US company uses that tactic, including Google. It's not even really tax evasion: http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2013/11/25/can-we-please-get-this-straight-apple-and-google-do-not-avoid-us-corporate-tax/

The Foxconn debacle was very overblown, their suicide rate is lower than every state in the US, and at least one article was pure fabrication: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/blog/2012/03/retracting-mr-daisey-and-the-apple-factory

As for the children, it's also nearly unavoidable when you manufacture in China because the government will willfully lie to you about it to get your business. Nonetheless, Apple tries very hard to get children out of its factories: http://qz.com/183563/what-happens-when-apple-finds-a-child-making-your-iphone/  http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/jan/25/apple-child-labour-supply   https://www.apple.com/supplier-responsibility/pdf/Apple_SR_2013_Progress_Report.pdf (page 17)

Argue it any way you like, the point is still the same, all companies are corrupt.

You're not even trying to refute anything I said? This is just boring now :D

If you read the lifehacker article I posted about their corruption, you can read some of the comments by someone who lives in Korea talking about how culturally the corruption is just kind of accepted. Samsung is undoubtedly far more corrupt than Apple, though.
