SSD for an old laptop?

I still have a fairly decent laptop (Compaq presario C700) that has an upgraded CPU, 2GB of ram, and a 1280 x 800 screen (Has one dead pixel, but it hardly shows. Everything on it runs fine, just the battery is dead and the HDD is getting slow. I'm currently running Ubuntu 14, but I can get Windows 8 if it would be fine for performence/battery life.

 

I would need this battery: http://www.amazon.com/Capacity-Battery-12-cell-8800mAh-Presario/dp/B0047XY8A4 and an SSD to go with it (For speed and power). I think its Sata2, because the 120GB and 256GB Sandisk Ultra Plus SSD's didn't really make a huge improvement on speed. So whats the best SSD I could get for this build? (er well, laptop not build

Since you're concerned about battery life I'd recommend the Samsung 840 Evo which idles at 0.1W and is also a very strong performer with Rapid technology. Also it is 7mm thick which will fit in laptops.

I would personally get a pretty cheap one, with a system that old I wouldn't go spending more than $100 on an upgrade.

Remember that when he does upgrade this computer he can take the ssd he buys out and put the old hdd back in to sell it. Getting an ssd right now would noticeably increase his laptops responsiveness and the only upgrade he can really do with it atm, unless he can install some more ram

This would be a great drive because it has the storage as well as the speed that fits into a laptop. It will show up in your pc as 2 separate drives. I would get this if your going to getting another laptop, if you plan on replacing this at some time with a desktop and don't need all that much storage then wait it out because it would be more cost effective to get 2 separate drives as well as they would be faster.

I agree that it would be worth it if he will re-purpose it later. If he just wants to keep it around as a spare laptop and not sell it, I wouldn't go spending a whole lot on a fancy SSD when it will get potentially bottle-necked by the rest of the system.
