First Build Recommendations

Hey Everybody!

This is my first time posting on the forums (being a new member and all), and basically I just wanted some input/recommendations on what direction I should take this build in. I will first qualify by saying that money is pretty much no object, I have around $4000 (AUD) to spend. The main uses for the system will be; Gaming, Programming and some light Video Editing. I also want to (I know that a lot of you will hate this, I am aware) 'future-proof' the system as much as possible without waiting any longer to build the thing (I've been waiting around 10 years now to build my first PC haha).

I've been researching (edit, watching a lot of YouTube videos) for a long time and I think that I'm on the right track, also I plan to overclock this system. Lastly, I am a bit of an audiophile and also I would like to (in the distant future) install a customer waterloop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

CPU - 4790K

Mobo - EVGA Z97 Classified

RAM - (?) 32GB, at around 2133Mhz

Power - (?) Something in the Platinum class would be good

Graphics - EVGA 780 TI Dual Classified x 2 in SLI (I've decided on Nvidia, no AMD for me haha)

Case - Corsair Obsidian 750D

SSD - Samsung Pro 840 256 x 2 (in Raid 0)

HDD - (?) 4 x 4GB, I like WD as I've had a few of there external drives and they've not let me down yet. Don't suggest Seagate though...terrible.

Fans - NF-F12 & NF-A14 PWM

AIO Cooler - Swiftech H220-X (Due to the expandability)

Monitor - ASUS PG278Q (Like I said, money isn't an issue at the moment...)

Keyboard - (?) Mechanical

Mouse - Razor 2013 Deathadder (?, not 100% on this one)

Thanks in advance for any info/suggestions. Cheers!

This is the second attempt at a post (the first one timed out for some reason), so it's a little short on exposition. I am aware of the hardware changes (880, new gen of CPUs, etc) but I'm not going to wait any longer to build a system as I've already waited 10 years and am going to take the opportunity while I actually have it.

You'll want to use the quote button (bottom right of someone's post) to reply to them so they get a notification.

Quite honestly I would "cheap" out on the things like the cpu and ram until Broadwell comes out unless you feel like dropping more money later on in to the system to upgrade it. I am working on a list of parts to see if I can get the same performance from a cheaper system anyways.

No worries.

When does Broadwell hit shelves? Is it going to have a major impact on RAM speed or amount?

Broadwell should be releasing some time early-ish next year. Intel isn't being very helpful with not telling us. Supposedly, from what they've shown with tech demos, is that it'll have way lower power consumption and better performance than current processors. Since you're in Australia it might be more expensive on release. I can't say for sure.

I really don't want to not help you either, but I've been up in over 24 hours and I really need my sleep. So I'm going to sleep before I crash on my desk. I'll be back in a few hours.

Fair enough, something that I will definitely take into consideration.

So what would you suggest in the meantime that can give comparable performance and overclocking abilities without giving off too much heat (I live in a reasonably hot part of Aus)?. And yes, we do get screwed on prices here.

You can get an i5 and wait for an i7 Broadwell, save up a bit of money in the between time.

You see, that's the thing...I doubt I will have money after the next few months. Which is why I wanted to splurge whilst I actually had the capital. That's the thing with money that I've found during my lifetime, you have it for a while and unless you spend it quickly, it gets chewed up by bills, rent, the wife, etc. Haha.

If you wait for Broadwell, then you might as well wait for Skylake. If you wait for Skylake then you might as well wait for Cannonlake etc etc etc

The trouble with waiting is you never actually end up buying anything  :D

Haswell-E is a few weeks off, but unfortunately it won't offer anything over Devils canyon if you are just mainly gaming.

That's kind of how I was looking at it. Got any recommendations on the Motherboard or RAM?

All of these are good gaming boards:

Gigabyte Z97 G1 Sniper and the Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 3,5 or 7

Asus Z97 Maximus VII Ranger or VII Hero

MSI Z97 Gaming 3, 5 or 7

As for Ram then you can't really go wrong, as most brands will work fine with haswell. The Kingston HyperX Fury red or Corsair Vengeance red/black would suit the colour scheme of all the above motherboards.

I think you would be fine with 16GB. You can always add another 2 x 8GB if you need it.

Hi pestilence_87,

It's a very powerful machine you are going to built. I see that you prefer WD drives, so my choice here would be WD Black . The WD Black is designed for gaming and heavier usage and would perfectly suit for programming and video editing too. WD Black is coming with 5 years warranty.

Here is the link to check it out :

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Hope this helps,

What is it with all these WD accounts lately ? You don't need to waste money on a WD Black drive when a standard Blue drive will do the same job for half the price.

I am sorry, but the Black drives are a waste of money in a pc imo. Why would you run games and programs off a Black drive when you have a fast SSD in your system ?

Because you cannot get the same ammount of storage on a SSD for almost the same prize as a Black.

You don't need a WD Black HDD to store files. Any hard drive is capable of that i.e Seagate Barracuda, WD Blue etc

You put your most used programs and games on the SSD. Anything you are not using stays on the Hard Drive. A 256/512GB SSD is plenty for games and programs to run off.

But not every game is going to take up 120GB. Anyway my point was about the WD Black drive. You don't need one in a gaming pc when you can get a WD Blue or Seagate for a lot less money.
