No, for a couple reasons other than whatever the budget people are fussing over.

  1. Gaming doesn't utilize multithreaded cores very well if at all right now (maybe in the future as games support more cores/threads it will), so all you need is an i5.
  2. The cpu is haswell, not haswell refresh, and if you didn't know, there was a problem with the dyes of the haswells which slows down heat transfer away from the cpu.
  3. 32 GB of ram is WAY too much for a gaming rig. You will not use 32 GB of ram in gaming. 8 GB is enough, and if you really are needing it for some reason sure, upgrade to 16 GB, but there should be no reason in gaming to need 32 GB.

Lol, $2800 Aud. Not such a great deal now.

So you're saying that getting an i7 and 32GB of RAM is a bad thing? It's not necessary to have, but it's dumb to say that it's a bad thing.

Also, your point about the heat dissipation of the Haswell CPUs is irrelevant as it's a non-K chip.

I'm not saying an i7 and 32 GB isn't awesome, I'm saying you'd be stupid to do it for a gaming rig as you'd never use that ram or utilize the mutlithreaded capabilities of the processor.  As for it being a non-K chip, personally I find that itself irrelevant, better heat dissipating means the processor should live longer.

$2891.69 in CAD, when the pre-built cost is converted over.

Using what they handed us specifically:

  • Cooler Master CM-690 III
  • Intel Core i7-4770
  • Arctic Cooling Alpine 11 Pro Rev.2
  • ASRock Z87 Pro3
  • be quiet! Pure Power L8 700W 80+ Bronze (subbed in for the 80+ Silver since PCPartPicker doesn't have it, however it looks like they are using the be quiet! System Power 7 700W 80+ Silver, which is roughly $120 from what I could find online, compared to the $100 of the L8)
  • Windows 8 64-bit OEM (assuming OEM since a pre-built system)

Total of known parts: $692.43

Now, assuming they used the cheapest parts from PCP (will include list, and PCPartPicker link), the cost to build it yourself is roughly: $1727.38

PCPartPicker link: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/DFMKsY

Now, if I go with the most expensive to try and get closer to the price, I end up with: $2397.18

PCPartPicker link: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/sGDXVn

I want to note, all prices are limited to CAD, and whatever was on PCP at the time, as well, I know some of the stuff is stupidly more expensive than normal, I just shifted what we didn't have specifics of to the most expensive general version of the item to try and meet the price.

Still not needed for 99% of games. The only case you'll need more than 8 GB is if you're doing a lot of things while gaming or if you are heavily modding a game like skyrim.

Or if you're heavily using Google Chrome while gaming, because it likes to eat up memory more than a fat kid likes eating cake. :S

I can't be responsible for people's ridiculous habits lol. Gaming should be done full screen or not done at all imo, so no room for chrome.

I think so, the pricesa of anything are higher here in Aus because we have a "higher living standard" and a "higher average wage". No shits given when you only have a part time job while studying :(

So is the UK, I think UK and AUS prices are pretty similar, the price of those components when converted into GBP are exactly the same as UK prices

Pretty much, with the 290s as comparison I saw about a 5-50 AUD difference, though I think that it's just the DCU II version is over prices in Amazon UK :P
