Well you could get something simple like a WD My CLoud which is just a basic NAS that you can access over the internet which is great so share storage between all your devices, though is only a single drive so not the safest backup

You could buy a more elaborate NAS like a QNAP which would allow more complex backups, streaming features and RAID support

Or you could build a basic cheap PC, shove some drives on it, and run FreeNAS or Windows Server which can basically do anything you want

All of these are doable for your budget

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii

What type of nas would you recommended?   The newer Qnaps or like an older less expensive model?

If you're using windows and office it is pretty natural to use  OneDrive (SkyDrive)

currently on "sale",  and a free 1TB if you are a office 365 subscriber.  So you may already have access to what you need.

I built my own windows home server from a fractal define mini (silenced) an MSI G43 board and an intel g3220, seemed about the same price as the decent QNAPs but I have more flexability

You could easily build a cheap desktop with an AMD AM1, or Penitum, with 2tb of storage, and just add drives as time goes on

Motherboard: MSI H81M-E33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($44.98 @ Newegg)
Case: NZXT Source 210 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($34.99 @ Micro Center)
Total: $290.94
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
