I wouldnt, most "affordable" ones just make blobs of plastic roughly in the shape you want

If you can actually find a productive use for them that makes them worth the cost.

Short answer - not yet

I'd say they're only really worth it if you're willing to pay hundreds of dollars on a toy you're going to use maybe once a month.

if you're into 3d modelling, cad software, etc it can be a very useful piece of machinery

If you want to tinker then it is only not worth it if you cannot comfortably afford it.  If you are looking for something to produce viable products for less than 20 grand then no it is not worth it.

I'd get one (or more) if I was running a business with it...

I don't think it's worth it (yet)...

Printrbot Simple Metal is a fantastic value for beginners -- no bed leveling, heated build, etc. It's PLA only but unless you're making usable parts that doesn't matter.

at one point, your are gonna spend more on your 3d printing supplies than the 3d printer. I would wait for the 3d printing supplies to get cheaper first then buy a good printer.

Then if you don't mind spending $300+ or a $100+ kit and building it yourself, go for it :)

At least look for demos on youtube to make sure its not a piece of crap. Also consider the price of the material you need to buy to use it.

I desperately want a 3D printer but I can't justify it financially. There are many problems with it.

1- The plastic is not cheap to purchase.
2- The machines seem to occasionally jam and leave you with useless half-printed garbage

3- Very few people actually have a use for it. I'd screw around with it for the first few weeks and then I'd get it out every 3 months to do silly things like print a battery cover for something.
4- You need a 3d scanner to "duplicate" things, so that's another expense if you want to do that

3d printers are great for people who can use them for their projects, or people who very often happen to need custom made parts for whatever reason. In most cases the machine probably never pays for itself.

Just browsing one site a 1kg spool of filament  was anywhere from $29 - $45.

I wouldn't say so, a lot of "affordable" ones don't seem to do a very good job, and the good ones are just too expensive.
