Thoughts on Org race league thing

rucdoc

Ok, so with the new racing mode coming out, and private matches and stuff, I'm thinking about setting up something so we could do like a racing league, for fun and training and stuff.

I Was thinking we could use a system similar magic, or table top war gaming leagues as opposed to a formal race set, so you race in x races post your times ect, you can race in more and your top x times will be used, then ranks in the race itself would not really be used, maybe as a tie breaker for two people with the same times in a race.

doing it this way we wouldn't have to have people race each other, unless you really want to, but would allow a lot more people able to participate. race would be seperated into classes, so m50 vs m50 ect,

I could easily setup a sheet for this.

thoughts, interest, ideas, hate?

EDIT to add proposal and other updates found later:

Ok gonna make this a formal Proposal to create a Racing League.

UOLTT Friendly Race League.

With the announcement of the Race Mode for Arena Commander, I propose a friendly, race league is established amongst the members of this Org. Owing to the fact that we are a world wide and large organization, and to allow for everyone who wishes to participate using a free form league setup, as described below, while still being regulated enough to allow for braging rights at the end of a season.

Structure:

A google spread sheet will be established, and made public so that everyone who is interested may sign up, this document will be used to track pilots, race results and standings with all formulations being public, and open to discussion and modification.

Each member wishing to participate will place their name on the signup sheet contained within the document which will then be moved to the race participants page by the oner of the sheet.

Race attendance and reporting will be the responsibility of the racer, and will be filled out on the sheet matching the ship used in the race in the first empty slot there in with: the pilots name, time (in seconds), and finishing place, a link to a screenshot of the end of the race is requested but not required.

Once a week, each pilot will participate in a minimum number of races, to be determined, to be elligable to claim victory in their class, for that week.

Scores will also be tabulated over the series allowing for weekly winners and over all winners.

Scoring:

Current scoring options are open to suggestions. as of now, each class is scored seperately, Then used to compile a win percentage.

Sheet location: https://docs.google....dit?usp=sharing

End of Proposal.

Please feel free to make suggestions about the above proposal. I would love to have everything in place so we can begin racing and tracking as soon as the mode is live.

EDIT 2:

The Google doc will be replaced shortly with a website, due to the fact that when I went to add multi track support it crapped all over the floor.

when the site is live a link will be placed here:

Hate.

Seriously though, it's a great idea. I'm one of those with very limited time to play so it might be difficult for me to compete live. This way everybody from the org can get into racing so I'm all for it. For this kind of racing it would be great if we could do laps without any opponents so that the element of randomness is eliminated.

so I was bored at work, and this is stuck in my head so I built a spreadsheet that will take entered data, based on ship rank the entries and display the top 10 results on the main page

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rQ06BwZXdkXq9rmFUf8Xx1qWTA7bVbHQn_nORJdpmTU/edit?usp=sharing

the red areas "should" be protected so only I can edit them, but anyone else can enter data else where.

The Basic idea would be a racer finishes a race, posts their time in the first empty slot, or over writes a replace if they are still there, where they finished and their name, and maybe a screenshot if they want, since this is a friendly thing atm, the sheet will then automaticly rank it against all the other entered data,

 right now it's setup for 100 entries, but can easily be expanded to handle more,

With this setup we can rank people against each other, within a class even if they are racing on different days.

It would be great to have any system for verification of the times/scores. Right now it's inviting you to cheat a little here and there ;)

snip

Right now the ships are all different speeds so I would have the fastest of each ship, for now.

Time*wintolossratio=player rank in that ship?

it would, at the moment be a friendly league, and there is a place where you can link screen shots. thus allowing for verification.

also the ships are seperated into classes so, m50 vs other m50 ect

I like the idea of adding the win/loose ratio to the equation. Also the number of played races could have some impact on the final score. So that one great time in your first race will not discourage you from racing on.

I can add that all in, stats are a speciality of mine, just let me know what you want and I can see what I can do

So

T*(wlr+tr)=psr

Or

T*(ap+tr)=psr

T=time

Wlr= win loss ratio

Tr= total ratio

Psr= player ship rank

Ap= average position

Again I'm all for it.

One small thing that comes to my mind at this point is that we don't know if time in seconds will be accurate enough. If the races will be very tight and the time differences smaller we might need to tighten it up and maybe include tenth's of a second.

Other that that the whole idea seems great and I'm really looking forward to checking it out.

Thanks for your engagement in this topic @rucdoc

I say time in seconds for a simple reason 84.23345 seconds is a million times easier for code to handle than 1:24.23345 as most spread sheets look at the second value and freak out and the first value and go, ok

so basicly times would be listed thusly:

2:34.79 would be typed in as 154.79 so that the number for seconds elapsed in the race are recorded and not the significat figure being the minutes.

sorry for any confusion there.

You should be able to display the time in minutes but code it in seconds.

Seconds are fine if your doing small races but if they create one that's 4 minutes long per lapor endurance races it might be better to code in minutes as in 1.54 minutes and then display accordingly

An Update. Currently I'm waiting on a local development server to come on line, but expect this to be online soon. Once it's up and running it shouldn't be long before I have something redembling a functional site.

I have a few questions though.

Would we rather use a system where entries are posted on the site directly by racers. or an middle man spread sheet where results are posted then approved persons would enter them on the site. while the first method would be quicker for everyone, it could lead to false data being reported easily. the second is more secure but a lot more work. I can do things either way. I would love to be able to pull data from the game directly but at the moment there is no public api system in place.

I'd go for a direct input on the website. It's faster and easier for everybody. The "middle sheet" isn't much more secure but adds a lot of work.
