Receiver between cards in sli and surround setup

yoltoudshoorn
Hello,

Currently I have 2x gtx 780's connected to 3 monitors using 3 dvi to hdmi cables and I'm using nvidia surround.

But soon I want to hook up a receiver to my pc, preferably using hdmi instead of optical(from my mobo).

Then 2 monitors would still be connected using dvi to hdmi cables, but the third with an hdmi cable to my receiver, and another hdmi cable to my third screen, while my receiver sends audio to my speakers.

Will this work? Do you suggest just trying it out?

Thanks!

It wouldn't hurt to try obviously, if it works like you want it to, great. I would personally just use optical, seems like it would be simpler and less hassle as it won't try to send a video signal or anything either.

Yes it will work. HDMI from your video card into your receiver's HDMI input is how I do it on mine.

Yeah, but you have 1 monitor, right? With nvidia surround it's a bit more complex I fear.

Just try it with the primary monitor (The one the start menu is on maybe?) Either way, just try it.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. The GPU is still going to see 3 "displays", just one may identify differently since the reciever is there.

Keep in mind that Optical doesn't have the bandwidth for HD or Master audio. The best it can do is stuff like 5.1 DTS. TrueHD and DTS HD-MA will be downsampled to DD and DTS. In games, this may not have any affect, I suppose it really just depends on what the game can output, but watching any Blu-Ray movies (or rips) will definitely have lowered audio quality by using Optical.

That's what I was thinking too, so I'll give hdmi my best shot.

I don't have the receiver yet, but as soon as I've tested it, I'll post the result.
