im getting my nexus 7 tommorow is there anything you recommend to get on the tablet to get up and running??

Nexus 7 is the best tablet for the money IMO. I have one too. I'd just unlock the bootloader and thats it

Maybe get an USB OTG cable while you're at it, if you'll want to connect a xbox 360 controller in the future or transfer some files from your Google Drive to your USB flash stick? Simply, I love my USB OTG cable :D Saved me so many times at school and helped many of my friends also ;)

Go to the Google developer page for android L and install it. I'm running android L on mine and its pretty sweet

Unlock the bootloader first so you won't have to reset your device in the future.

If you want to flash a custom recovery, kernel or root the device in the future.

im not too bothered about that stuff

You will still have the warranty, the thing that you will be tweaking/playing eith is only software wise... if something happens, just restore or update to the official android version supported by that tablet and you'll be golden ;) (as Linus says)

I've been rooting android devices for years. There isn't much risk of voiding warranties as long as you follow instructions, read forums, make backups etc. It'll really unleash the power of your devices, and help you make them your own.

Nexus 7 root is very simple. Enable unknown sources, go to towelroot.com and download the root program and hit root and you're rooted. Takes literally less than one minute.

Na no worries about that it's pretty safe, it does it with the tablet running like an app and if it fails it just restarts the tablet..
