TVs dead, time for an upgrade.

neon_bowser

So my LED TV suddenly went awol and colors got all distorted on me (it kinda looks like everything's running in 256 bit mode since basic blues and greens seem to not be affected). Anyways it served me well, I got it for free, and I'm moving so I figure now is as good a time as any for something new.

My old was a 45 inch screen so I'd like something about along that size but I'd be willing to go down a little, not up. 1080p, not totally into higher resolution that have little to no content yet(saving that for a monitor;)). It's main purpose would be console gaming and Netflix. No smart TV or built in disc reader(do they still do that?). Oh and maybe cable but whatever. I'm not looking for 3D but if it was in budget with a decent TV then why not.

My budget here is 500. One of my main questions is whether it should be another TV or a projector. Does my price range allow for a decent enough projector/screen to match what kind of TV that can buy me?

Any thoughts or inputs are greatly appreciated. Oh and I plan on sound system one way or another so that won't be a problem with the projector.

TV, better blacks than a projector. You could get a sound bar too.

I would try http://store.sony.com/40-diag-w600b-series-led-hdtv-zid27-KDL40W600B/cat-27-catid-Sony-HD-TVs?_t=pfm%3Dcategory%26pfmvalue%3Dfaceted (Good edge lit backlight, good local dimming)

But you could also look at samsung and sharp.

If you can control lighting in your viewing area and have the capability to mount a projector properly, check out budget 1080p 3D projectors from Optoma. It will cost more than $500, as the projector alone will go over $600. The large screen is very worth it if you can accommodate this.

This would likely suit your needs, though it is an older model:

If you're not that sensitive to motion blur, this looks like a decent value (current model):

I'm sorta stuck on my budget so I think I'll be taking the LG TV. But down the line I will definitely look into Optoma some more. Thanks for the mention.
