How often do you upgrade your TV?

MPX309

So i have a Smaung LE40C, and I'm not sure how long I've had it, 3/4 years maybe? . . . But I feel I'd like something abit bigger, 50 inch. However I still live at home and my mother would probably be like "you don't need a new tv, don't waste money"

and she sort of has a point, because well, half of me actually loves the TV, the picture is fine for gaming and movies, and sky doesn't look too bad, but I dunno, is it time I got a new one?

Never.

I only get tvs because of people throwing theirs away. There is so little on TV I deem actually good that I just don't bother. The small handful of things worth watching are found online anyway.

I don't have a TV, but I would never buy a 50 inch 1080p one. 40 inch is hiting the limits of sharpness even when viewing from like 2-3 meters away. 50 inch is only 4K, but the new ones still don't have a DP so it's a waste too. TV's are stupid.

We replaced our Sony Wega because it had eaten through its third lamp, and only refurbished ones were for sale. So we bought a Sony R55 60", went to 1080p 120Hz with 3D.

I've no idea, probably not anytime soon.

Our 720p rear-projection television is still going strong. Purchased sometimes in the early 2000's

I have had my Toshiba 42" LED 3D TV for 2 - 3 years, I don't plan on getting rid of it within the next year or 2, unless a good 4k TV comes out, and more content for 4k comes out.

I have a 42" hitachi plasma from around 8 years ago and at the time it was one of the best you can possibly get (it was £2500). Its not even HD but the picture quality is still very good and perfectly acceptable for me.

I never really watch TV anymore, but we replaced our tube TV that we've had since 2003? this last Christmas. It could do 1080p, but it was blurry as hell.

Historically speaking I've upgraded every 3-4 years. The first time was going from a 27" to a 32", both were 720p, The next time was going from that 32" (when it died, after only about a year and a bit), to another 32" that was 1080p. Then after about 3 years I upgraded to my current set, which is a 50" 1080p Plasma that is gorgeous.

I won't be upgrading this TV unless I can

1. Find a top-of-the-line Panasonic Plasma for cheap or

2. OLED 4K TV's come out and I can afford one

I strongly dislike LCD tv's, as there's just too much sacrifice in visual quality compared to Plasma. OLED has the potential to rival and beat Plasma in that department, without the downsides of a Plasma.

I may pick up a DLP (or whatever happens to be the top of the line visual technology at the time) projector in a few years for a Home Theatre when I buy a house eventually.

Lol, upgrading TV's. Mine is still an old box form factor that is 480p, from somewhere around 2002. My parents don't seem to mind sub-HD, and I don't watch TV. If I want to watch a movie, I watch it alone in my room on my 1080p monitor.

I-I swear it's better.... ;_;

I had my 40" SHARP aquos until it broke after 5years (planned obsolescence ftw)

Now I have a 40" Panasonic. Had this one for a year now, let's see how long it lasts.

Planned obsolescence in the sense of it being designed to die after a predetermined time frame is a load of crap. I have a Sharp AQUOS LCD CCFL HDTV that's around 5 years old that I use as my second monitor (Therefore it likely has at least double the hours that a normal HDTV would have) and it has no signs of age or wear. At the rate it's going, I'll probably get another 5 years out of it.

Obviously some people will have ones that die prematurely. This is the same thing as the silicon lottery - sometimes you just get unlucky. I'd be interested in seeing a study showing the average lifespan of various manufacturers TV's. I imagine the number would be quite high, and would surprise you.

Well mine just died out of the blue. There weren't any signs before that either.
