A UK smartphone retailer leaks Samsung Galaxy Alpha specs

Source

"Mobilefun, a smartphone vendor, posted, and swiftly removed, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha listing, but not before The Inquirer spied the juicy details.

According to the leak, UK customers will be able to pre-order the carrier-unlocked device for higher-end mark-up of £549, which pits it against similarly priced smartphones like the iPhone 5S and Samsung's own Galaxy S5."

Cached view of leak

So not too much of a mark up for premium materials, eh?

"The phone looks set to tout a hefty octa-core Exynos 5 processor, a 12MP camera with 'super fast' autofocus, and 32 gigs of storage."

More info on the Exynos SoC's

So I guess we're looking at an 8-core CPU that could run between 1.3GHz and 2.1GHz. Cool. 32GB of storage is also a nice touch.  To me the camera seems slightly sub-par for a flagship though.

"The phone will also feature a 4.7-in super AMOLED display with a 1280 x 720 resolution, racking up a decent 320ppi pixel density."

That resolution is kind of sad for its price point.  Reminds me a little of the Moto X

"The phone promises 4G/LTE capability, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, GPS, and a micro USB port. There's also a secondary 2.1MP shooter for front-facing snaps."

Some pretty standard stuff.

"According to the listing, the smartphone comes sporting a 'metallic finish' in line with recent rumours of a metal side-trim, and reveals a black colour option."

Could this mean that Samsung isn't going with premium materials like everyone thought yesterday?

In conclusion, we can probably expect:

  • An 8-core Exynos 5 SoC
  • 32GB of storage
  • A 12MP rear-facing camera with 'super fast' autofocus, along with a 2.1MP front facing one
  • 4.7" Super-AMOLED 720p display (320ppi)
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat
  • All of today's standard wireless technologies

I personally don't think this phone is all that great, what do you guys think?

They need to kill the Octa-core already it's useless and gives you worst single thread performance which is the most important thing in a phone's processor but they probably make so much money on it by charging a premium on it then tricking consumers into thinking it better.

Why would the revert back to a 720p screen (although not everyone is interested in that aspect of a smartphone.)

Maybe it's to provide competition with Mozilla's smartphone, spec's aren't the worst but my HTC One X rivals this but it's 2 years old.

Yeah,  I think Quad is the highest they should go on the current ARM architecture.  Anything higher is a little too slow.

4,7 inch and 720p? Did they fall on their head?

Yet another failed attempt of Samsng Galaxy whatever 2864935738795

I am a fan of 720p smartphones, you can have what is still very high resolution on that tiny screen, longer battery life and less heavy system specs and make the device cheaper.

Is that a big deal, because they're rumored phone doesn't ship with a 1080p screen they believe there is some kind of competition. What a joke samsung. They're s3 which launched over 2-3 years ago had specs similar in a sense to this.

actually i think with this phone, Samsung is pushing the design rather than specs.... besides, from the rumors in these few days it looks like this phone is a mid range phone, and many mid range phones still have a 720p screen...

Maybe but I think it'd have serious competition from HTC One E8, Mozilla phone & Project ara.
