want to preorder nvidia shield tab. some Qs left.

FloRolf
Go to solution Solved by Warcony,

1. Is there a way to connect a wired keyboard (10keyless mechanical) and mouse while charging?

It may be possible.  If you get a micro usb Y-cable (male micro usb to female micro usb and female full sized USB) and then a USB hub. Shield Tablet and portable support simultaneous OTG and charging via the micro usb port.

2. If not, maybe a wired keyboard, bluetooth mouse (high end logitech) and charging?

This will definetely work.  See my above answer on how.

This might work + an usb hub.

http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-Power-Samsung-AtomicMarket/dp/B009YPYORM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1407284090&sr=8-2&keywords=usb+otg+charging

http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-4-Port-USB-2-0-Ultra-Mini/dp/B003M0NURK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1407284163&sr=8-2&keywords=usb+hub

3. Streaming over wifi in 1080p 60hz possible or only with wired ethernet?

Yes it is.  The Shield will need to be connected via wired ethernet but your gaming rig can be on wifi. Game stream is possible via wi-fi at the game resolution.

4. If so, wired keyboard, mouse, charging AND ethernet possible?

Same as number one.  It may be possible.  I know using the aforementioned Y-cable you can do charging and ethernet.  You will need an ethernet adaptor:

http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Ethernet-Adapter-Black/dp/B00ET4KHJ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407284259&sr=8-1&keywords=ethernet+adapter

Does that mean i can NOT stream games from my home pc (see sig) to for example a friends Wifi? Or even to a wifi in another country if fast enough?

With the recent updates, you CAN stream games for your home PC while you are on another wifi network (say at your friend's house).  Both connections will need to be damn good though. I am pretty sure it is only from the same wi-fi connection.

6. How is note taking on the shield? Can i use it for university?

Incorrect statement-->Yes, it should be as accurate as any wacom tablet for note taking.  The stylus is no where near Wacom or Ntrig for serious notetaking and writing.  It is OK for light use like annotating PDFs or lecture slides, but not for writing class notes.  I have a surface pro 3 and it is MUCH MUCH better for handwriting

7. When wifi 720p/60hz streaming, does the computer still needs to render 1080p (if 1080p monitor) or does it manually set the res down so i could enable higher settings on lower end machines?

It sets the res on your computer and is rendered at that res (720p) so yes, you can crank the settings up.  I am pretty sure it only streams the pc game resolution.

See above in quote for my comments in bold.  Experience with Shield tablet and shield portable.

Hey guys,

I'm gonna pre order my shield tab anytime soon but i've got some Qs left which maybe change my decision.

Here we go:

1. Is there a way to connect a wired keyboard (10keyless mechanical) and mouse while charging?

2. If not, maybe a wired keyboard, bluetooth mouse (high end logitech) and charging?

3. Streaming over wifi in 1080p 60hz possible or only with wired ethernet?

4. If so, wired keyboard, mouse, charging AND ethernet possible?

5. "Ultimately, I’m a bit conflicted on whether GameStream and GRID are really designed to stand on their own though. GameStream only works while you’re at home" (from anand tech review).

Does that mean i can NOT stream games from my home pc (see sig) to for example a friends Wifi? Or even to a wifi in another country if fast enough?

6. How is note taking on the shield? Can i use it for university?

7. When wifi 720p/60hz streaming, does the computer still needs to render 1080p (if 1080p monitor) or does it manually set the res down so i could enable higher settings on lower end machines?

(Planning on streaming games from my future 750ti rig to my tab in university :D)

Please link a device for 1-4 if possible.

Thanks! :3

Only WiFi no ethernet

1. you could ghetto rig a powered usb hub or use a y splitter (nvidia recommends this method for charging/ ethernet port adaptor)

5. gamestream works through internet now. it was implemented with GFE 2.1, grid is cloud computing

7. GFE will automatically put the rez at the size you are streaming to. so if you stream at 720 /60 it will render in that

  1. not 10-keyless, but yes, UBS keyboards via and OTG cable are OK, but Android is sometimes slow in some apps so I would not rely on it
  2. bluetooth mouse i dunno, maybe and charging or usb keyboard as it takes up the charging port
  3. yes, it will stream over WiFi, is  that not the whole point of it?
  4. again, only one OTG thing at a time (or charging) (max 300mA)
  5. game stream is only a LAN thing, unless you have beefy internet. GRID works over the internet properly, but is still shit (not the real deal) due to latency issues
  6. the pen isn't worth it by the looks of it, but I would just get a laptop (I am getting a Surface Pro 3 for uni, well worth the extra)
  7. I have no clue how it works but probably and don't pin your hopes on it working on uni wifi, it just won't

I would just get the i3 Surface Pro 3 or the Surface Pro 2 if I was you, you prob will not look back unless you are pinning your hopes on game stream

and as a side note, I don't use my on the go cale for my phone because it is way too awkward to carry a keyboard around with me. Plus, Android has inherant latency issues so it is virtually impossible to use a mouse. With Ethernet, if you can find a device that is compatible (good luck) then it will prob still be faster to use wifi

Compatible with Windows 95

Don't preorder anything. Ever.

Either way you will NOT be able to stream games from your home to university.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

@TheRoss0411

Mh, afaik you could only 1080p60 stream eith ethernet and wifi was limited to 720p60

@felixbearpig

Was just looking for a hub but there's non that also poweres the tablet.

@tomlambert01

Yeah wifi streaming is the point but at what res? ^^

I have 50/10 at home so that should be beefy enough to stream 720p60 right?

Also Uni internet is usually freaking fast here. Why do you think it wouldnt work?

I only pin my hopes on gamestream if it works through internet so i can stream games to work/uni/friends house etc.

@Sauron

Yeah i usually don't preorder but i want to use it in my 3 day holiday before i will nevee have holidays again lol.

Also, could you explain again why i wouldnt be able to stream to uni?

It's because streaming through the internet would be impractical at the very least (assuming nvidia will even let you do it) because of latency, it would also require a beast internet and wifi connection that your university almost certainly doesn't have and an epic internet connection on your part (google fiber level of epic).

Mh, are you sure?

Because for in home nvidia only requires 5/5 which is basically nothing.

Unis in germany almost all have at least 50/10 too (dunno mine, not there yet), same as mine. Doesn't sound so bad if you ask me.

5/5

50/10

I'm not following you, what are these numbers?

And either way, as I said latency, upload speed etc are still a problem.

50/10 = 50mbits down and 10mbits up internet speeds.

But i agree on the latency, it'll probably suck.

This kind of streaming is one of the main selling points for me though... :/

Then you should probably go for something else. I advise you wait for other tegra k1 tablets to come out or just get the shield being aware that streaming is only going to happen at home. Also, 10Mb up are nowhere NEAR enough for game stream unfortunately, I struggle using steam streaming across my own room through 100mb ethernet. (my main pc has 1gbit ethernet but the other one doesn't :P )

So then why does nvidia say ~5/5 is enough?

Or do they mean 5mbyte? O.o

If it DOES work at the cafe then probably, however it does say that 5mbps is the minimum requirement for it connect, it doesn't mean it will be playable. In my experience input lag is a big issue at 720p and higher even in local network.

Meh, but i somehow want a tablet anyways. Gonna be my next in-bed twitch/youtube watching device if gamestream doesnt work :D

3. Streaming over wifi in 1080p 60hz possible or only with wired ethernet?

Game stream is possible via wi-fi at the game resolution.

4. If so, wired keyboard, mouse, charging AND ethernet possible?

You will need an ethernet adaptor:

Does that mean i can NOT stream games from my home pc (see sig) to for example a friends Wifi? Or even to a wifi in another country if fast enough?

I am pretty sure it is only from the same wi-fi connection.

6. How is note taking on the shield? Can i use it for university?

Yes, it should be as accurate as any wacom tablet for note taking.

7. When wifi 720p/60hz streaming, does the computer still needs to render 1080p (if 1080p monitor) or does it manually set the res down so i could enable higher settings on lower end machines?

I am pretty sure it only streams the pc game resolution.

No problem :)  This is the one I have (Amazon Canada link).  If you are in the States there are probably more options.  Will most likely have to buy online.

I'm in germany so i have even less options :D

But as for the bluetooth mouse, do i need the usb-thingy that comes with it or does it communicate with the tablet directly?

OTG Charger/usb port -> charger + Keyboard

Shield bluetooth -> mouse

-> enjoy gaming on the tab as if it was a small computer :P

I am sure that a bluetooth mouse can connect directly to the tablet and you won't need a bluetooth dongle.  You can easily check this, just search your mouse and see if anyone online has connected to any tablet before.
