Looking for new router

So I've been looking at 2 routers to upgrade to since my current one sucks. I've been looking at the ASUS RT-AC68U because reviews say it's stable and fast. I've also been looking at the LINKSYS WRT1900AC but both are quite expensive. All I really need is dual-band, a fairly good software to include prioritization, and a good range (roughly 150 ft.) I'm really new to the whole router market so forgive me if I sound stupid. Are all good routers this expensive because I don't need all the fancy VPN whatever stuff. I just want something that works well and does what I need. Help would be very much appreciated, thanks.
