Worth Upgrading This Laptop?

Benjio

My sister currently has a Dell Latitude E6410 (http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Latitude-E6410-Notebook-Professional/dp/B003O7R6JY) laptop she uses for university. She's starting to have some issues with Windows and wants a new laptop (even though I told her I could just re-install it for her). Her boyfriend told her she should get an Asus V551LB-SH71T (http://www.amazon.com/Asus-15-6-Laptop-12GB-V551LB-SH71T/dp/B00HLTTZ8G) which he could get for $700. While it is a bit of a step up from her laptop, it's nothing huge. Still a dual core processor, still it is a bit faster, it has a worse screen, and a 5400 rpm harddrive. Do you guys think it is worth the upgrade? I personally think she should keep the one she has and wait a little longer. If she were to get a new one her budget would be $600-$700 so any recommendations in that price range would be great as well.

Eh, that laptop is actually pretty good. I would actually take it, even if the screen does suck. Is it an Ultrabook?

The Asus.

Yeah, it's definitely not bad, I just think there are better options for $700.

Well, have you gone to a brick and mortar store like Best Buy or Fry's or something like that?

Sometimes, they do. I got a pretty good i3 laptop for 400. I saw a i7 Toshiba laptop for like 700 only, originally 1400.

Does she need that much power. You could show her a Chromebook. They are faster than I thought.

Intel 4790k | Asus Z97 Maximus VII Impact | Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 16 GB 1866Mhz | Asus Strix GTX 980 | CoolerMaster G550 |Samsung Evo 250GB | Synology DS215j (NAS) | Logitech G502 |

Well I wouldn't trust her buying a laptop by herself, and I sure as hell am not going shopping with her. If there was a Microcenter or something near me I would probably check it out, all I have near me is Best Buy.

Well she's going for her masters in architecture, so she's doing Autodesk/Photoshop stuff. She more or less just wants a backup laptop, so I guess she would be fine with less.

Well, Best Buy, believe it or not, sells some excellent laptops. I especially like their dedicated Ultrabooks section. Powerful, yet light. And plus, some of them are less than 1 grand.

I still feel like I could find the same laptops for the same price/cheaper online.

Uhm, I think there's one nearby, still I don't really want to waste my time looking at laptops I can probably get for the same price online.

Never heard of it, like terry said, probably don't exist in America, or at least Wisconsin.

Dude, I think the best way to search for a laptop is to get hands on with it. You and your sister should go to a physical store, not online, and go hands on with a laptop. Maybe she is interested in one herself and wants to feel it, so take her to do so.

I mean... I think pictures are good enough, and I'd rather save a ton of money to buy a nicer laptop by buying online.

But, who knows? Sometimes in store can be cheaper than online.

Yes.. But i'll also only get to choose from like the 10 models they have on display, and I have to take the time to drive out to the store.

Best Buy has so many laptops on display. like 20, if not 30 or even 40 on display.
