Slower Internet Speeds After Upgrade?

So i recently bough myself a TP-Link W8960N modem/router and an ASUS RT-AC66U router. I'm currently using the TP link as a bridge for the asus router.

 

My problem is that after replacing my single Netgear D834Gv2 i've been unable to get as fast download speeds with the TP Link compared to the netgear, despite the fact the tp link uses a broadcom chip which is supposed to be ideal for my situation where my details from (http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au) were the following:

 

  • Line of Sight: 2519 m
  • Estimated Cable: 3149 m
  • Estimated Attenuation: 44
  • Estimated Maximum Speed: 6000

 

My netgear used to be able to sync with speeds of the following:

Netgear Router connection info:
                                    Down         Up
Connection Speed      2935 kbps  671 kbps
Line Attenuation         46 db         15 db
Noise Margin               7 db           7 db

(TP link offers a lot more info so if you need it then feel free to request it)

 

 

I can only assume that the netgear and TP link routers use different chips and in my case the netgear has a chip that works best for my situation/line/ISP/DSLAM or whatever is the correct terminology.

But could it be some other problem?

 

All i changed was the router i didn't change the cable/plug. In the settings on the TP link i fiddled around with the modulation (unchecked g.lite) and some other settings (Disabled QoS, Wifi, bandwidth control). The ASUS when originally setting up needed to change it's ip or something since the TP link was already using 192.168.1.1, so the asus assigned itself 192.168.2.1 and my desktop is connected to the asus via ethernet to the asus router.

 

If you need anymore detail let me know and i'll try my best to provide the details you need, i'd just like to know why i'm suddenly getting slower speeds despite having newer hardware.

Find out if your TP-Link can use DDWRT. If so change to that and then edit wifi channels to something that's not already taken up to improve reception. 

 

Edit some the ISP default settings in DDWRT so that you get the best transfer rate possible.

TP link doesn't support DDWRT and i've already changed which wifi channel it broadcasts to one that isn't being used. My issue though isn't wifi speeds, its the actual speed that the router/modem connects to the exchange. for some reason i'm now connecting at almost half the download speed than before for no apparently good reason. But thanks for your contribution.

I haven't messed with DSL for several years, but IIRC the modem would show the rate that it was supposed to get, not what it was currently getting (IE. mine always said 1536 down/ 768 up as that was the plan I had).

 

Have you tried doing an online speed test to see if it is close to those numbers?

I don't think modems show the rate they're supposed to get, for me it only shows the rate it's currently getting each time i reboot the router. I have done a speed test and the speeds reported are slightly less than the ones reported by the router but that's to be expected. Either way the speeds i'm getting overall are much slower than normal.

The modem should be in bridge mode, meaning that you will loose the built in WiFi and switching capabilities of the D-link. Router/modem combo units are notorious for poor routing performance if no it bridge mode.

The modem should be in bridge mode, meaning that you will loose the built in WiFi and switching capabilities of the D-link. Router/modem combo units are notorious for poor routing performance if no it bridge mode.

Yes my TP-Link is in bridge mode (it's not a D-link) and yes i am aware that router/modem all-in-ones are poor compared to ones that are made specifically for each task but in this day and age, you can't get just a modem you can only get it with a modem/router.
