Wifi optimization help

Hi there guys,

 

I have a Asus RT-AC66U running DD-WRT Kong build 24200 and Im trying to pretty much milk as much speed as I can get from it in wireless just for giggles lool

 

There is one problem though, my wireless testing device is a Samsung Galaxy S5 which has support for 802.11 a/c 2x2 mimo but even so I dont know what is his max speeds.

 

The router is mounted on the wall and my WIFI settings are:

 

2.4Ghz
SSID: RalmWifi

Channel 13 since is the one with less overlaping here.

N. Mode: NG-Mixed

C. Width: 20Mhz

Multicast Optimization: off
Sensitivity Range: 2000

 

5Ghz

SSID: RalmWifi_5G

Channel 56 (although there is no one around me with 5G wireless, epic xD)

N. Mode: Mixed

C. Width: VHT (80+80 MHz)
E. Channel: lower upper

Multicast Optimization: off

Explicit Beamforming: Enable

Implicit Beamforming: Disable

Sensitivity Range: 2000

 

I have a couple questions, so people talk about using the 2.4GHz band and the 5GHz at the same time to reach even higher speeds, how is that done? Do I need to have the same SSID for both??

 

Another thing,  what can I do to get even higher speeds?

 

My testing shown that Im getting 526Mbs linking speed in the bedroom and 866Mbs (-49dBm) in the living room where the router is.

Using Wifi Speed Test app from the Play Store have the server in my Desktop PC wired.

Doing the test in the living room around 2M to 3M away from the router I got this:

 

Download: 215Mbs average, max 238Mbs, min 190Mbs

Upload: 250Mbs average, max 284Mbs, min 190Mbs

 

I think this is the max speed from my phone lol, is it? :D

On the 2.4 GHz side disable G if you can as it's slowing down the 2.4 GHz side to about 75 Mbps instead of the 300 Mbps N also if you could disable N on the 5 GHz side them you'd have the best speed from that which is 867+ Mbps.

Yeah I wanted to do that but I have some devices at home (laptops) that dont have N support, even so I could problably just do that for testing xD

But how I do to have it use both bands at the same time?

What do you mean by use both bands at the same time? You can only use 5GHz or 2.4GHz at a time on a device like a laptop, phone etc. but the router transmits both signals at the same time. If you have an old router you can set it up to be a wireless AP so that takes care of the G devices while the AC66U does 2.4GHz N and 5GHz AC only.

I was talking about simultaneous Dual band between the client and the router. To maximize speed pretty much.

After searching around doesnt seem that simple lol.

Edit: The idea was to reach the advertising speeds (or go near lol) like my router, adversised speed of 1750Mbs which is 1300Mbs(5Ghz)+450Mbs(2.4Ghz).

On my router, I have the ability to name each network.  My 2.4 I have with an SSID ending in 2.4 and the 5ghz I have ending in 5ghz.  This way I can choose which one I want to connect to.  For instance, all my capable devices that can connect to the 5ghz I will connect to the 5ghz network this way I never dip into a lower band.  For devices that are older or smaller, I will connect to the 2.4ghz network.  For instance, I have a DirecTv wireless media thing and my wireless printer, these do not have the capability of using the 5ghz networks so I connect to 2.4 and it works completely fine on those networks.  Also I have my newer laptops connected to the 5ghz networks and I can still print to the printer on the 2.4ghz network.  I have a EA6500 Linksys router btw.

Yeah I do that already, but what I wanted to do was to have a cliente (phone or pc) to connecto to both bands at the same time, simultaneous, in order to increase the max speed xD Its nuts and doesnt make sence, I know but would be fun.

I have 90Mbs download and 20Mbs Upload.

But the testing Im doing is Internal in Lan, is not using any Internet.

Its fiber pretty much. The speeds jump quite a bit from ADSL or Cable.

Yeah, that's not how it works. If you want the best wireless network possible do something similar to what I did. Have a decent AC class AP in the middle with 20MHz on the 2.4G band "144Mbps" wireless N. Then have another one or two 2.4G APs doing the same at the exterminates connected either with Ethernet or Powerline for proper coverage. Pick channels 1, 6 and 11 and be a nice neighbour. Then in the middle of your house flood the 5Ghz band with all of the wireless AC-age. There you go, more-or-less the best wireless network you can get.

 

Ok so if you're on the edge of this network you'll only get ~30Mbps and if you're using powerline ontop of WiFi you'll add ~5ms latency. But those are at the edges of your coverage and this is a fairly cheap setup. Dude at the edge of the network can hammer it at 30Mbps, dude at other corner can hammer it at 30Mbps, you can hammer it in the middle at 30Mbps on 2.4G AND 400Mbps or so on the 5Gs. That's about as good as it'll get.

I dont have wireless problems, Im in a appartment and its not that big.

I was just trying to reach the max speed possible for fun.

LAN = Local Area Network. Has nothing to do with something specific, is what you use from your devices to your router, using either WLAN or LAN, so either wireless or cable. Both connect to the router using a local network and than the router connects to the internet.
