AMD R9 285 Tonga confirmed

Source: http://www.sweclockers.com/nyhet/19097-amd-tonga-blir-radeon-r9-285 (warning the article is in swedish)

Source 2: http://videocardz.com/51104/amd-launch-radeon-r9-285-equipped-tonga-gpu

SweClockers report that the R9 285 will utilize Tonga PRO, meaning there is still a chance for R9 285X with Tonga XT.

The only major difference between Tahiti and Tonga cards is limited to frame buffer size and interface width. Tonga will most likely launch with 2GB GDDR5 memory on board, but it doesn’t mean AIBs won’t release 4GB cards.

AMD Radeon R9 285 is expected to launch somewhere between late August and early September.

Let's hope for some damn good performance. I don't have that much hope though, to be honest. Releasing with 2GB?

if the article seems like ass it's because I can't translate SweClockers in Firefox, even then it would only be a rough translation.

So this is inferior to the 280X?

Why are they releasing this if it's the same thing with a narrower memory bus, why not just continue produce the 280 and 280X?

You have a 270X. why not add one more instead of replacing.

Could be less memory but better performance and cheaper.

This might be like Nvidia did with Maxwell, I don't know. Maybe they just want to try a little bit of milking.

We will see, the article does imply it's the same GPU though, maybe it has silly high clocked memory or something.

I'm placing my bets on the 870 this gen.

Because shouldn't the 870 basically be a 780?

Is this another desperate rehashing instead of delivering a proper new product?

What a dumb card. Why release a new card with LESS memory and bandwidth than the older one? Makes no sense, considering games using more vram now than ever. I understand making a replacement for 270/280 series to GCN 1.1, so it can support trueaudio, freesync, etc. But at the cost of Vram is just very dumb.

Give me an official announcement and then we can talk. Other than that, give me the 300 series, and that'll be much better.
