3 290x draw up to 900 watts

you def need more than 1K watts

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I think 1000 watt is fine if it has all the right pci express cables for the gpus, and its quality.

probably no overclocking thou.

you might as well just get a ax1200i to be safe.

you mentioned you be adding 2 more of the same cards

so in total it drawing 900 watts for GPUs alone

yes single 290X your PSU is plenty

but not when you are going for 3 way CrossFire

whats the difference between AX 1200 and AX 1200i?

Top recommendation right now is the EVGA P2 1200W. Or really any EVGA G2, P2 or T2 1200W+ units (especially the G2 1300W, nice and cheap), or Superflower Leadex 1200W+ units.

Others would be the Corsair AX1200 & AX1200i, Cooler Master V1200, Antec HCP-1200 and HCP-1300 Platinum, Seasonic 1200W Platinum and X Series 1250W.

whats the difference between AX 1200 and AX 1200i?

Both are made by Flextronics (very good server-grade manufacturer). The AX1200 is an older 80Plus Gold certified unit, but still is very good, and the AX1200i is a newer 80Plus Platinum (slightly better) unit with Corsair Link Software capabilities (not worth very much in my opinion). The AX1200i does perform better than the AX1200, and since the AX1200 is older you may not be able to find it still under warranty.

Instead of the AX1200i, I would personally recommend the EVGA G2 1300W or P2 1200W. Definitely excellent units, and usually quite cheap compared to their competition - But that depends on the pricing where you are.

I had a HX1050 powering my main rig then, with 3x HD7970's in 3 way CF. Yes, the HX1050 seemed to e handling 3x HD7970's but I did note that the PSU was running hotter than with 2 cards. After one nail biting month, I simply could not take it anymore and upped it to an X1250. For your 3 way R9 290 setup, definitely go with a 1200W PSU from Corsair, Seasonic, EVGA and the like. I am contemplating 3 way R9 290X myself....and though the X1250 should handle a 3rd card well enough, I prefer to err on the side of safety. Hence, the Enermax Maxrevo 1500W PSU on my 2nd rig will replace my X1250.

You got an option on pcpartpicker.com to build your pc there, they will tell you how much wattage your build will use:)

I'd recommend a Corsair AX1200, to give you a bit of OC and upgrade room. Also, if the PSU ages, it may go down efficiency wise.

I don't think you want "nice and cheap" with a build like this. I would recommend either Corsair PSUs, which also go nicely with the black and red theme you got.

By nice and cheap, I mean ridiculously good performance with a surprisingly low price given the performance.

Colour scheme is fine in my opinion.

I'd recommend a 1200w seasonic 80+ platinum power supply.  or a corsair ax 1200 or 1500i.

I wouldn't advise crossfiring 'reference' 290X gpu's unless you plan on watercooling them.

Also change the cpu to the i7 4790K.

Well ok now that lee has pointed it out, I wouldn't recommend reference 290X's or 290's at all. Unless you plan on changing the cooler, or doing a custom loop.

Definitely don't need more than 1200w, but at this level

  • you need single rail.
  • you probably want a 80+ gold psu as the blips in power tend to amplify with scaling wattage (your choice if not overclocking)
  • you need a reliable brand eg seasonic, silverstone, corsair etc.

totally agree with the guys above me. 3 290x reference cards will be unbearable and you will likely limit your performance and overclocking capabilities. While we are on the topic of overclocking, you might as well spend a couple extra bucks on a 4790k instead.

Personally I would go with a custom loop as it looks much cleaner. Of course, if you just want the cards to show them off, air coolers will do the job.

1000 watts is enough but get something like 80 plus gold or higher but i would recommend a evga g2 1000w. But get something like 1200 watts just to be on the safe side.

Yeah as Brad said, you don't really need 3 290X's. Unless you were aiming for 4K. But that isn't really worth it in my opinion. You should only be aiming for 4K right now if you have too much money. Most games look terrible in 4K and don't run very well anyway. By the time there are more 4K-ready games and graphics cards that can more easily run that resolution with decent settings and good fps, 290X's will be fairly outdated. Still good, but imagine someone today being proud of running 3way SLI GTX 285's.
