How to cool a laptop

minimoose

So I got an HP pavilion laptop from 2010 which isn't very good (it was free) but I am trying to fix it up, and one thing I don't know what to do about is that it runs very hot and loud as soon as it starts up. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I own a laptop cooler, but I would prefer not to use it constantly.

well maybe change the thermal paste to get better temps

other than that i cant think of something else

take the laptop apart, remove the fan. clean the dust that has probably accumulated between the fan and the heatsink. if you have thermal paste and rubbing alcohol at hand, then you can remove the heatsink from the CPU and replace the thermal compound after cleaning with alcohol.

IMPORTANT: IF YOU REMOVE THE HEATSINK/DISTURB THE THERMAL PASTE ON THE CPU, IT MUST BE REPLACED

you will notice a huge change in temps from removing the dust and if you remove the heatsink and replace the thermal compound, that will be another few degrees.

How to cool a laptop. Simple. Drop it in a pool of water.......although you might not be able to use it afterwards...but at least you cooled it and that's what counts. :P (JK)
