Dual GPU´s in a mATX build with aftermarket cooling = bad?

Go to solution Solved by theroflcopta,

You'll be fine. Put 2 decent noctua fans in and you'll be good. Yes your temps will go up but nothing will start on fire or anything. You should be fine don't worry too much.

(I´m from Sweden. Sorry in advance for bad grammar, etc... :) )

Hi!

I have a pretty decent midtower gaming rig (standard ATX), running two MSI GTX 760 in SLI.

Lately I have been thinking about moving most of my hardware into a smaller package, i.e. to a mATX-based case.

I know that if I´m going for SLI on a mATX board, the spacing inbetween the GPU´s will be smaller than on my current board,

and I have been told that you should go for cards with the regular fan, pushing the air out the back instead.

- What do you guys think? Will the narrow spacing be bad for my cards?

The case I will go for is probably the upcoming Corsair Carbide Air 240 (link below)

I'd say that with that case you should be fine because of the epic airflow. 3 cards would definitely be a problem, but I think 2 can do reasonably well.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Stay ATX honestly. You'll have to do a full install of Windows with the new MoBo. Also your cards will run hot as hell. I like the Air 540 but I personally think the 240 is ugly. If you don't have one already, I think you should invest on a 144HZ monitor considering you have two 760s.

Yes and no in terms of 2 cards in a smaller form factor. The reason I would say its bad is because there is less air flow within your case. Aftermarket coolers have fans that that push air within the case where as a blower card or more people call a reference card pushes are out. However if you have good cooling it may not be a big deal honestly. Another option would be to water cool the two cards within the case. This of course would be more costly but its a option. If it were me and I were building within a smaller case I would purchase good cooling and 2 reference cards. Personally though to note I'm a one card kind of guy stronger stability, less heat, less power consumption.

I got away with it but for most they don't.

Considering this guy isn't too savvy with English, he'll probably have a tough time.

I think I'm gonna have to switch to that case since I just switched to an Matx motherboard.

I especially love that it has 2 bottom fans instead of the stupid "hot swap" docks that the 540 has. Which where honestly a stupid idea to begin with I think.

How can you think the Air 240 is ugly when it looks exactly as the 540? It´s just in a smaller package. The 540 is too big for a cube case... too much space in the other compartment above the PSU going to waste. And a clean install of windows won´t be a problem.

And I already got a 144Hz monitor

Ive been running 2 7970 reference cards in a matx form factor since release. Never had any problems.

The only thing to note is its loud depending on the cards.

A blower style cooler (as found on most reference cards) is recommended.

I´m going for one card in the future - no need for SLI to max out premium games anymore.  Yes, water cooling could be an option in this case, but I´m only considering air-cooling for now :)

AFAIK most mATX cases only have 4 slots (ie, dual slot GPU takes 2 slots, I don't know the correct terminology). This will mean no gap between GPUs. This is bad.

I´m going for a mATX build, not a mITX. Love the design on the FT03 though...

You'll be fine. Put 2 decent noctua fans in and you'll be good. Yes your temps will go up but nothing will start on fire or anything. You should be fine don't worry too much.

Yea noctua fans are great I'd just be cautious with your planning. I would look for the greatest spacing between card one and two if you do end up on the 2 card method of thinking because then you can get one of those stretching bridges and that should help air flow a bit plus there are those kits that corsair and I want to say nzxt has where you can put a closed loop cooler on the card.
