Help with a G3258 Build

(Bold-ed the main parts for a TL:DR)

Hello guys. I have been debating whether or not to get a custom PC build after having a Mac for a couple of years (boo, I know!). And... I have decided its a yes.

I've been watching Linus' videos for a while now to try and grab some tips, and I was originally going to get the new i7 4790k, but after seeing it compared with the G3258 I'm definitely going to get that CPU instead (it's sooo cheap and sooo good!). I don't plan on streaming it, and my main plan is to just play games.

However, as I am new to building PCs, the rest of it I have little to no clue about. So... I would like your help! My budget is around £700-750 and as I said it's main purpose will be gaming. I hope to run it on dual/triple monitors in the future.

So, I need some tips on the best motherboard to allow me to get the best overclock out of the G3258, some ram (8-16GB), a GPU and power supply. Bonus things like an SSD are good, but as I said a bonus. I'd like to get the best main parts first.

THANKS ALOT for reading all of this, and thanks alot alot for your help!

No, none of those are required. Sorry, I should have said that in the OP.

That's fine.

Do you have any cases in mind?

is small form factor wanted/needed/unwanted?

The form factor really doesn't bother me. Big/small whatever, just aslong as I get the best for my money. When I was looking for a case I was thinking of the NZXT Source 210 due to it being cheap, and NZXT being generally good cases with good cable management.

However, the case is really not set in stone.

would you prefer a black case, or a white case?

How much storage do you think you need?

I would prefer a black case.

1TB should be more than enough - is it worth getting an SSD?

Thanks for the suggestion bro. That's a pretty beastly looking GPU, however there's no CPU cooler and I heard they're almost mandatory if you're going to over clock. Is there any you would suggest?

Is there also a still beefy GPU for a bit cheaper, as the video Wiflare linked makes me want an SSD even more.

I would personally spend the extra money to get the extra bling factor.

the cooling would be much better too, but otherwise it's the same hardware.

Thank you both a ton for the help, I really am grateful. I'll research some more into the parts and work out which I like best, then I'll let you know.

Thanks again guys:)

Quick question, do I need to use a Z-97 mobo? PCPartpicker said that I can use a Z-87 and just update it in the bios or something.

you probably can, but there can be a hassle, and it might not work for some boards.

i use a 40€ (~£32) asus h87-plus board from an online outlet store to overclock my G3258.

i think it's is capable to update it's bios even without a cpu.

You did? Was it relatively easy to OC with it?

cant help but think the 780ti is a little excessive, like i get the rational and it's probably best price/performance but you are clipping a bit of performance with the bottleneck

A few people have suggested going for the Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X... would that be a better alternative?

Judging by the budget I guess you will game at 1080p, 780ti is overpriced for 1080p, get the Sapphire R9 290 and invest on quality PSU, case, SSD and a proper CPU cooler

My current rig for entertainment/gaming: i5 4570 3,2GHz; MSI B85M-E45; ZOTAC GTX760 AMP!; 8GB (2x4GB) by Kingston; Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm; Corsair 200R, Corsair VS650; Dell U2312HM, Samsung DVD R/W optical drive; CM Devastator; Corsair MM400 gaming pad

look the problem is bandwidth. if you have a very high performance card in with lower end cpu your going to be slowed down by the cpu to some extent. The 290 is in between gtx 770 and 780 tier so it's closer to the mark that i would expect. Most people wouldn't use more than a gtx 770 or r9 280x with that cpu.

I would assume that amd cards would bottleneck more readily given their larger memory bus but thats just a guess

Thanks for your suggestion mate. 1080p gaming is fine for me. I really was unsure if spending £400-ish on a graphics card would be worth it. Looks like the Sapphire R9 290 will be the graphics card I go for instead.

The G3258 is really in there to see how it performs. If it does well, I'll keep it - but if it does poorly I'll just switch it up at Christmas. I just really wanted to test it out as the price is so low, and people have been getting amazing overclocks with it. As it's only a cheap CPU, I don't mind upgrading it ASAP if it does poorly.
