Install onto a USB drive.

Like, instead of the hard drive?

Yes it's a live USB stick, you just boot to it. I personally like elementary OS or mint

Yes. Then you also wouldn't have to mess with the Windows bootloader. Just choose to boot from the USB or HDD during startup.

OK. Good. I think ill do that.

Elementary OS is pretty cool. They will soon have a beta for their new version Freya too http://isfreyareleasedyet.com/

OK, and none of these will have probelms runing on powerpc instead of intel, and wont be to slow?

Hard to say but I know people managed to get Elementary OS Luna running on netbooks and with it being pretty usable. It's based of Ubuntu so it should work just fine and you will have a lot of software that will support it.

I got Kubuntu to work smoothly on an old school Pentium III system, so try that.

Is Kubuntu how much lighter / heavier than Lubuntu? I have Lubuntu on my old Compaq Evo N800v laptop (from Win XP era. It has a slow Pentium M and 256MB of RAM AFAIK), a bit barely runs it. Still runs better than Windows XP though (I can't believe it was usable with Windows XP. It was sooo slow even with fresh install)

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

I'ts really light. It also had 256MB of RAM and it's pretty smooth. It came with Windows 98, which I was surprised even came with it; it was deadly fucking slow.

I might want to try it, even though the laptop is an old fart (when it was my only PC, I still remember having to wait ~10 minutes to open IE 7. And that was with minimal amount of bloatware on IE7 and Windows XP). Still somehow manages to keep battery for nearly half an hour.

32bit is like 600mb, idk about 64 bit. I got it to fit on a CD, so try. I would try to use a 8GB, 4GB min.

ok. I want room for all files too. I think a nice 16 or 32 gb would be good.

Im not usinmg a cd or dvd. you should hear the imac g4's disk drive. its like a r9 290 stock cooler, or louder

So, I don't care about the noise of a CD/DVD drive. I'm used to it. Plus, my PC can't boot to USB.

Question:

How would i get to bios of the imac g4?

Also, it only has usb 1.1

Would this be slow?

USB 1.1 is slow, but if you have time, you shouldn't worry.

And for getting into BIOS... I have no idea. Google it, perhaps? To at least figure out if this is possible at all.
