Medium settings should be possible. Maybe not in all games.

who cares...

Hell no. Minimum 1440p gaming would be a 280x or 770 on low or medium settings while a 290/780 or 290x/780Ti would be good for high settings. 270x won't deliver the fps you want.

So what's better?

1080p with ultra or 1440p with low?

1440 on ultra.

Save up and wait until you can afford a proper gpu.

Yeah I'm afraid that GPU won't do you any good in 1440p. That resolution is much more demanding than 1080p. I'd get a nice 1080p monitor (there a tons of good ones out there for cheap prices) when you're on a budget. If not save up some money get a highend GPU and then get a 1440p monitor.

If your plan is to go with the upcoming Asus Rog Swift you probably need a CF/SLI in order to make 1440p @ 144Hz happen with high settings (but SLI makes more sense since this monitor will support G-Sync).

There was a guy here once saying it's not worth even stepping up to 1080p from his potato monitor. Some people truly don't care if they are cruel to their eyes. :P

There are quite a few R9 290's (even R9 290X's) going for cheap on eBay due to the bitcoin mining craze, average price is $300 or even less if you keep looking. :)
