Should I go with i5-4690K + MSI GTX 750Ti(Overclocking possible) or i5-4760K + R9 270X/R9 270(Overclocking not possible?

Go to solution Solved by Sauron,

If you aren't overclocking there's no point in buying an unlocked i5, go for i5 4690 (non-k) and r9 270, it will spare you money over a k processor. Alternatively you could get a xeon e3 1231 v3, which is basically as fast as the 4690 if I recall correctly for slightly cheaper while having other interesting functionalities.

So I am at this point where I don't know, if I should spend more on a graphics card or CPU.

If I would go with the i5-4690K, it would be "easier" to change for more demanding graphics card.

On the other hand I could get a better graphics card, but CPU would be a little slower. Also I wouldn't have a chance to overclock my CPU in the future.

Note: I am not planning to buy a better CPU cooler, until I need it for overclocking.

Thanks in advance! ;)

You can still overclock the 4670K, it's a 'K' series unlocked processor.

I would go with the more powerful CPU and the lesser CPU. The 4670K is still very capable.

I believe it is 4670K?

I'd go for the 4670K any day if it meant a slightly better GPU.

For the longer term I heard that the 4690k has more overclocking potential. As well as being slightly faster, which means it would last longer before having be replaced.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

I would get an i3 4130 and a better GPU tbh

OR an i5 4440 and b85 board to save some money and a better GPU

Overclocking is not that beneficial or necessary it is just for the enthusiast, if you are working towards a tight budget then OCing is something I would just throw out the windows

and just to be sure to overclock I need a Z87 or Z97 motherboard to overclock + a better cooler for the CPU?

Well the thing is that in finland the K series of i5 4690K is on sale and it's cheaper than the "original" 4690  ;) It's around 185,95 € and the 4690 is  192,95€

Oh I see. And what about the xeon?

Either way if they are on sale you shoul probably go for the 4670k, however there are benefits to a z97 motherboard so I suggest you get one of those. It's also handy for upgrading.

Well yeah the Xeon is around 239€, but I just wanted to know if MSI Z98 PC Mate 4xDDR3 CrossFireX Socket 1150 ATX would serve the job?

I'd say yes, but if you're getting a xeon you can spare money and get an h97 motherboard.

well, ive got an i5-4690k + r9 270x and i'd never change that :D its working epicly good togather

anyway i never had any intel cpu but its so cold compare to my old fx-8320 @ 4.6ghz so if you ask me i'd go with the i5-4690k and an r9 270x (i dont rly like nvidia cards, had an 660 once, it was enough)

OP, if you are on a budget look at the i5-4460 and an H97 motherboard and put the saved money toward a better GPU, for gaming that is much better the i5-4460 will run ANY games on max details provided you have a good enough gpu, here would be my suggestion:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($184.98 @ OutletPC)

Motherboard: MSI H97M-E35 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($79.99 @ Amazon)

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3GB Dual-X Video Card ($259.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $524.96

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-07-30 07:43 EDT-0400

If that is overbudget get the R9 280 it can be found at 199$ afer rebate on newegg ATM

The i5-4460 CPU boost to 3.4ghz by itself and for gaming is PLENTY as i mentionned already.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 2 VR

get a better GPU the processor is important but NOT as important as a powerful gpu. those processors are nice but if you got like i5 4590 and trade up for like a 280/280x you are going to see much better returns. you wont be able to overclock the processor but honestly you probably wont need to. The processor should be enough to not bottleneck the gpu but not enough that its completely surpassing it in price. it all comes down to having a powerful gpu.
