Seemingly random restarts. What the....!

ManBehrPig

Just curious if anyone might have a suggestion for where I should begin to look to understand why my months old home built rig is seemingly randomly shutting down and rebooting. It doesn't happen every time I'm on it and more often then not it happens under low load, like web surfing or playing a YouTube video. Plus it's filled with new,(fairly high end) equipment. So who would you say is the most likely culprit I should check in my rig? It is an economical version of Linus' ultimate editing build guide so it should be basically sound build wise. I have 24% space available on my system startup ssd, an intel 730. Could that be the issue? I don't know, I'm just lost and wish I was more knowledgable in troubleshooting.

ok that is weird

does you system just crap out randomly or there is a pattern?

which programs will cause the restart?

could you try with one stick of RAM?

do a memtest

So far it has happened while in Firefox, Steam, and my VLC player. All of which you'd think my system could handle.

I could, use one stick of RAM, but how could I tell which one if any was malfunctioning?

What software do I need for a memtest?

This was my first build and a lot of this diagnostic stuff is brand new to me.

you will have to test them one by one :P

Cool, I will definitely give that a try and see how it goes. Gotta say though, I'm praying it's not a hardware issue. I would think it would likely be covered by the manufacturers' warranty, right? I gotta go look that stuff up again. Sigh.
