Is this a decent SSD ?

I/O
Go to solution Solved by hojnikb,

Well, it seems like you're really hell-bent on going for the MX100, and I respect that. Keep in mind that the EVO is faster in all categories and the samsung data migration software is excellent compared to what crucial has to offer. However, this is just my opinion. Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

its really not. MX100 destroys it in writes and some areas of reads aswell.

But that really doesn't matter, as those ssds are so fast compared to a hard drive, that you won't notice any differences between them. Unless you're doing some really heavy IO, but then again, sata drives ain't that good anyway :P :P :P

tl;dr

Get the MX100 and ignore samsung/intel fanboys.

It's unexceptional, but not bad by any means.

You'll see a nice performance jump from a mechanical drive.

I wouldn't get the MX100, it's on the lower end of the SSD's. I would recommend the 840 Evo/Pro, as they're much more reliable and faster. If you do however decide to get the MX100, it will still blow away your WD Black.

I would personally go with something intel or samsung. However for the price this is a good option. :)

Yeah, the Crucial MX100's are pretty good all-around. I believe the IOPS is a bit lower than others, the write isn't superb (something like 330MB/s?) but the read is what you'll care about the most as a general consumer and this matches/beats probably 90-95% or more of the SSDs out there in read speed. If you're looking for a business-related solution, there are better (and more expensive) options. This, however, is one of the best-priced SSDs for its performance for anyone just looking to upgrade from their HDD(s).

Go with samsung or intel.

The Samsung is $30 more but is it that much faster really ?

It'll be a noticeable upgrade for you regardless of how good or bad it is, btw. This and the Crucial M500 are currently my top two for cheaper SSDs to recommend. Which of the two depends on their price at the time, really.

No. Only the pro is good and even then it's still not great for how much more you pay. You look into Samsung when you're going for 500GB/1TB SSDs now, unless you're somehow not able to afford those but can waste money on 128/256GB versions that aren't great for their price.

It wouldn't be my first choice although, it will be quite the difference from a mechanical drive.

So I spelt something wrong in my post... I don't care I don't read through what I write and I type very quickly.

Intel 3770k stock, MSI Z77A-GD65, MSI GTX 760, Corsair Vengence DDR3 1600Mhz 16Gb, Corsair RM 550W, Samsung 830 256Gb, some random hdds.

I rather go best price/performance/GB/dollar I really don't think there would be a real perceivable difference in speed in any decent SSD now in days for general use/gaming. I could also be very mistaken.

you likely wont notice any difference from one ssd to another with their relatively small speed differences, when looking into an ssd you should go with a brand you trust and that has a good warranty. also make sure it looks good if you want to show it off

It's more than just speed. Samsung drives are known for being very reliable.

Might just go with this ShellShocker deal 480GB of SSD for $200 bucks sounds good to me.

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226372

Or I could go with the 256GB SSD and pick up another 4GB stick of Ram to run in dual channel with my current 4GB stick of Vram. this will make my system more snappy right ?

It was said above, but the speed difference isn't much compared to the immensely better reliability of the Samsung SSD's.

That's a budget ssd, nothing special. It is a good ssd if you want a budget one though.

The EVO is what I would call a performance ssd. It once step up. Crucial's M550 competes with it.

They say the Crucial MX100 has great reliability, performance, and price.

The read speed is the same on the MX100 as the M550 @ 550GB per/sec. The write speed is slower on the MX100 but really I don't spend all day installing software so in real world use the MX100 seems to be just as fast.

Alright, you could go for the MX100 then. It's really up to you.

I agree with @xXButchXx

Also ssds arnt just sequential read and write speed I suggest you check out a review or two on them. Tomshardware and anand tech usually have great ssd reviews.

It would seem the difference between consumer grade and enthusiast SSDs are just menial at best kind of like how some people like to buy a piece of hardware that's only 5% faster in limited scenarios for %25 more money just to say they have the fastest toy on the block.

I have enthusiast ssds because they'll do what I want and need when I ask it from them. Just a heads up there a few enthusiast drives left. Intel 730, Samsung 850 Pro, and I believe sandosk has one, and plextor used to.

Look at a 780 to 780 ti its the same going from a performance ssd to a enthusiast one.

No not really. The read times and latency are almost exactly the same on the Samsung 840 vs Crusical M550 vs MX100. As for price between 290 OC and 780ti ... The performance really is not there to justify the 780ti massive price premium.

Yeah, but you're only paying $30 extra for the Samsung 840. An argument can be made that the reliability and extra bit of performance can justify the small "price premium" that is $30 extra...
