Tablet as a 2nd screen

I've never had a tablet but I'd be interested in one mainly for a second screen on my desktop PC. My desk wouldn't fit another fullsize monitor on it but I could prop up a tablet on there somewhere. So I'd like to know if any of you have used a tablet as a second screen and how it is? They don't have HDMI inputs but from what I've gathered you can use an adapter for the USB port to hook it up as a 2nd screen or there are apps and some wireless methods to achieve the use of a secondary monitor for a tablet. I'm not a very tech savvy person as you might have caught on by that description but I'd be interested in hearing how the experience is and if it's worth it or does it function improperly when used like that.

You could use sometihng like splashtop as a remote desktop but I do not think you can run it as a dedicated second monitor

Although I do prop my ipad up infront of my PC to use facebook/spotify/youtube etc etc

You can do it with OSX, and with parallels on ipad, not sure it works on windows or on android

Oh yeah I should have specified that I'm using Windows (7 at the moment but not sure how long) so I'm guessing that if possible the set-up would need to be happen on an Android device (not touching Windows tablets).

Pretty sure it is a much better idea to get more desktop space and get an actual monitor....

I knew someone would say this but it is not an option. Besides I could use the tablet as a separate device on top of it but as I stated its main purpose would be that of a 2nd screen. It would seem though that no one has much experience with pairing a tablet as a second PC monitor and I'm not comfortable blowing the money just to try if something works properly so I'll put this purchase on hold.
