[Advise] Tap tool set

Hello Linustechtips forum,

I am looking for advice on buying a tap set. I'm working on a stainless steel case modding. I will be making extra holes for the motherboard. This will be 6-32 holes. If i also can make holes for CD-rom with the tap set, that would be great.
I researched and found this:

http://www.harborfreight.com/sae-metric-tap-and-die-set-60-pc-60366.html - SAE & Metric Tap and Die Set 60 Pc
http://www.sears.com/craftsman-13-pc-tap-set/p-00952068000P - Craftsman  13 pc. Tap Set
http://www.irwin.com/tools/taps-dies-sets/64-pc-machine-screw-fractional-tap-solid-adjustable-round-die-set - 64-pc Machine Screw / Fractional Tap & Solid Adjustable Round Die Set

Can I get your advice wich tap set i should choose and where can I buy it?

hey and welcome to the forum.

i can tell you that the first link is plenty enough to work with since you will use only the small taps i think.

you can find them in any DIY store or fixer upper.

i got myself a 24 piece tap set and i'm very happy with it don't pay to much because for how many times you will use this the cheapest will be the best bargain for you unless you're gonna do this a lot then i say go for the best build quality and get it from a decent brand.

 [conclusion]

take the cheapest set with all the taps you need save money and space.

That is true, i'm not planning to do a lot off modding. (modding is not the cheapist)

I will go tomorrow to the store to buy  the smallest set that they have.

Conclusion

You had a good advise :) B)

It it well worth it to spend the extra money on good taps. If you only need a few sizes you would be better off buying them individually and getting high quality ones, especially if you are tapping stainless which taps much harder than mild steel.

Remember, you will also need a proper size drill bit, likely one you won't find at your local hardware store (#36 for 6-32 IIRC).

@Scheer,

Yes your are right. The 6-32 is used for the stain-off for the motherboard.

Are you suggesting that I better buy from the internet or just the special 6-32 drill that i need??

I think i will buy a simple basic set from the shop en the special one from the internet? maybe the link in my first post?

If you can find the right size drill bit locally, go for it, but they are not something you will find at Home Depot or Ace Hardware (at least not where I live). Fastenal may have them, but my local one only sells number drills in a set and the set is around $250.

The downfall to cheap tap sets is the durability, they will not last very long when tapping stainless. It would suck to break the tap after two holes and have to go buy another set just for that one tap, so that is why I recommend just buying the tap by itself and spending the money to get the good one which may save you money in the long run.
