R9 270 crossfirex vs R9 290x...

So I found this little article about the R9 270 in corssfirex vs. the R9 290x. Link: http://www.ocaholic.ch/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=1346

And then I'm there like...

WAT. I never knew this until yestarday and I'm astonished. And the cheapest R9 290x (on newegg) I could find was $480 USD. So you can buy 2 Sapphire R9 270's or 270X's and get about the same performance as a 290X. And save $100-$300.

I'll stick to waiting for the 870/860 to come out. Pretty interesting though :)

thats a lot of rubbish. two low end cards wont ever outperform one high end card. Not to mention if the game doesn't support Xfire then you will just be using one card.

well thats true about the performance in (SOME games) but when it comes to choosing a single high end verse crossfire/sli 2 lower cards. always go for the single higher end card. crossfire/sli drivers dont play well with some games...

If the game doesn't support it, odds are it wouldn't need it anyways, most modern day titles support it.

@op, if you're trying to save money though, buying a used 290x would be a much bigger money saver.  You can pick them up for ~325$ for reference, ~360-390$ for non reference.

no its just common logic a higher card will always beat out a lower end, as well as multiple gpu scaling scaling being pretty poor

It is not always better, and here in Germany you can almost get the 290 for the price of two 270s, defintely for the price of two 270Xs......so I would rathher take that. The R9 290X is just too expensive here compared to a 290.

So in the end you would have more VRAM and no crossfire issues with this and pay basically the same. An overclocked 290 is almost on par with a 290X, so that would work.

BUT I will say this, it is impressive and a great option for people who want to upgrade!

Well,

I guess everyone has their own point of view on things like that. To me is CF/SLI always just an option when it comes to highend GPU, because then you want to get the best performance possible. A low/medium end card CF/SLI can cause issues, maybe the game doesn´t support it, micro stuttering, VRAM problems. There´s a huge difference it between a R9 290/ R9 290X with 4GB VRAM and 512bit memory interface and a CF of 2x 2GB VRAM and 256bit.

That´s why I would not go to a low/med end CF/SLI but always prefer a highend GPU (doesn´t have to be top of the line but within that segment).

A friend of mine thought so and bought a GTX760 SLI and was under the impression he could out perform one of my GTX 780 Ti´s in single run mode... his eyeballs dropped almost on the screen when he saw that I was faster with 1 card than he was with his SLI. I mean okay I wasn´t much faster but 1 highend GPU won the race.

Get the 290X now. Then once you have enough money buy another one and crossfire it.

There are trade-offs: Game support, more heat, more noise, and it consumes more power. Also if you want higher resolutions or higher AA, it'll be better to go for the 290X because of the VRAM
