Have you OC'd the A8 6600k?

Edit: If you haven't OC'd it by a decent amount you have a bottleneck. I would suggest either upgrading to an I5 if you have the money or an FX-8320 which you could then easily OC using a Cooler Master 212 EVO.

Your cpu may bottleneck a 280x a bit in certain games, you should still be able to run Battlefield 4 at at least high settings with that combo I'd guess. A 270/270x might be a better option which wouldn't be bottlenecked by the cpu.

You are pretty much at the top end for FM2 unfortunately. For a power spike worthwhile you need to upgrade to AM3+ (Which will last to possible late 2015 so that will last a while). And no you cannot use an FX-8320 that's AM3+.

a 280x might be slightly hindered in cpu heavy games, but not by a whole lot. overclock the 6600k a little and you won't have many issues. My travel m-itx rig has i5 2500 in it (non-k), and the only game it bottlenecked with a 7950 was crysis 2 during fights, everything else was always gpu dependent. A non-k 2500 is about the same (for gaming performance) as a decently overclocked 6600k if memory serves right.

Edit** This roundup review shows that in high end gaming, you would be fine for the most part. they even use a 7970 (280x). the A-10 6800k is the same cpu as the 6600k (only iGPU is different), so go by that for comparison.

Mantle will save your ass in BF4. In other games that CPU will severely cripple that GPU not to mention that the CPU is weak so it cannot handle the CPU intensive situations in any games that demand it let alone feeding a high performance GPU.

To stop bottlenecking? Buy a better CPU.

It's still a pretty decent cpu, I think quite a bit better than what you are giving it credit for. Is it an i5? No. But it should still be able to handle pretty much any game at pretty decent settings.

It's kinda not going to play smooth in any games that need CPU grunt like MMOs and online mutiplayer games. I have a Phenom II x4 955 OCed and it is quite allot better that any APU and even it can't play great in many CPU intensive situations.

Well it's not "quite a lot better than any APU", the 6600k does better than it in benchmarks. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-955-vs-AMD-A8-6600K, still though, I think a 270 would be a better fit than a 280, to hopefully eliminate any bottleneck.

Just stop using BiasBoss already LOL. OCed the 955 is a full tier above the APU chip and I don't think the APU has much OCing head room left as it is factory clocked high. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html OCed

Forget the 7870 they are overpriced right now. The 280x will be good for you but I would consider upgrading to an Intel platform in the future when fund permit.

Unfortunately it's kind of a pain migrating a current copy of windows to a new computer if you don't know what you are doing or if you don't have additional hardware and or are unwilling to spend on additional hardware. If you have an extra HDD laying around and a copy of Windows then it gives you an option to mirror your current HDD to a new HDD on the new motherboard.

I think that microsoft locks down the copy of windows to the motherboard and HDD it was originally installed on. I had the same problem and the only way to get around it was to mirror the HDD but you need a copy of Windows in order to do that.

Running your current install of Windows with a CPU / Motherboard upgrade will not turn out well. You will want to do a fresh install if you do an upgrade like that. You can back up any data (pictures, music, games, etc) you have on your current install to an external hard drive, or other large storage device. Then just transfer it all back over to your hard drive once you re-installed Windows. Like I said earlier though, your current CPU should be able to handle any game as long as you don't expect to get max settings/super high frame rates.

That only applies to OEM computers (which the OP could have, I'm not sure), even then, calling Microsoft to activate it could very well still work with a different motherboard, it just won't activate automatically. Mirroring the hard drive is a bad idea if he upgrades his motherboard/cpu, please stop suggesting that.
