WoW questions, might suck it up and try it

Scratchy1215

So when i was like 12 or something i found the WoW battlechest, the 40$ green one its in my closet gathering dust still. But since i have that what else would i need to buy to play? Ik it comes with the original game CD and the expansion CD

(bought it as a kid because i thought it was a offline game)

but after searching for a mmorpg with a class that either has either damage over time curse type things or a class that you summon pets or minions only games i found were Allods(dead game) or WoW. so i think its time to give WoW a try in the near future but still not sure if i really want to. I was going to try Wildstar but no class really looked like what i wanted.

So my question is what should a maybe future WoW player, id be brand new to the game, buy or do?

The battlechest should come with a month of game time. You may as well try it out to see if you like it or not. They also have a free trial up until level 20. For a class with damage over time and pets, play a warlock with the affliction spec.

Has two codes for 10 days free game time, two strategy guides for burning crusade and normal game, two install disks and a product catalog but i dont see the 30day pass. i doubt these keys are even valid, there invite a friend codes lol

G2A has the WoW complete pack for very little iirc (Which includes everything up to MoP) so IF you're going to buy wow do it from there.

Also I can already give you insight on the DoT classes (Affliction warlock and shadow priest). I play both and they are both fun to play. Affliction has a higher skill cap, requires more micromanagement and knowledge of how temporary stat boosts can be abused but therefore has higher damage potential. Shadow priest has less micromanagement but is still fun in his own way, also has offhealing for if your healers are shitty :D.

My advice would be to try up to lvl 20 first (do shadow priest at that lvl, affliction warlock not too good early) or try to borrow a friends account.

Hi!

The battlechest you have is the one with 1 expansion (The Burning Crusade). The battlechests that are sold today include already 3 expansions (TBC, Wrath of The Lich King & Cataclysm). I don't know if your chest will still work.

Anyways: you can try out the full game until level 20 for free. After that, the new generation battlechest costs 15€ and that includes 30 days playtime. You can level up to level 85, after that you will need to buy Mists Of Pandaria for access to level 90 (current highest level). At the end of this year the new expansion will launch ( up to level 100).

I played WoW through Vanilla, and TBC. I quit shortly after the release of WoTLK, tried Cataclysm for a month, and again for MoP.

It's very easy now, you get everything handed to you on a silver platter, and it is a rather enjoyable experience if you fancy playing with your own music in the background. But when you get to end-game it is takes just a couple days to get good enough gear to jump headfirst into the raiding (if that's your cup of tea, it was mine) and get the end-game gear within just a couple weeks.

Personally i cannot stand the game now, as they are dumbing it down with each expansion, and removing stat requirements, so it's more "user-friendly".

You may as well give it a try, because you won't know if you like it until you try it yourself, but from the perspective of an ex-hardcore raider, i would say it's a big pile of wank now.

Yea that pretty much sums it up. I keep coming back to do 3s and every time I just get upset at the game for being such a joke now (pvp wise). When my subscription expires, for some reason, I always want to buy it again even though I know I'll barely play it.

Still debating all this, if my friends knew i wanted to try WoW theyd give me a weird look and back away lmao. Theyre all still console fanboys when it comes to video games. I still play games like tera and SWTOR and theyre very fun games. And im a hardcore raider or hardcore pvp depending on the class i play, when i do healers i pve dps i pvp and tanks i do both. But the main reason i never tried WoW was due to the graphics, i felt other games had better graphics, i think i actually did try wow at a friends house and thats what made me not get into PCs and continue to play oblivion at that time on xbox. Even games like RoM and allods back then had better graphics. So now there updating them and it looks like a game i might want to try, but thats if i can give up my Star wars love

I reminisce quite a lot with WoW - like Onyxia raids. First time tanking Illidan as a prot warrior - i didn't realize you had to pop shield wall when he detaches his blades of azzinoth. Whole raid group wiped in like 3 seconds flat. Prot pally tanking was awesome as well, but they've buggered that up and you can't mass AoE tank trash mobs like that any more. Horde trying to raid Ironforge, and getting bitchslapped across the room by ol' Magni Bronzebeard.

Only good thing that happened in WoTLK was under Wyrmrest Temple, waiting to raid Obsidian Sanctum (i think it was) and there were 2 horde raid groups versus the 1 i was in. Some of the horde turned on their pvp and tried taunting us to fight, we obliged and ended up wiping both their raid groups.

Good times....

IDK why a lot console gamers think WoW is 'nerdy' and joke about it when they sit on the couch and game all day. They're not really any different.

uhm, i only see mmorpgs growing, not fading away. with ESO and others going to consoles finally its only a matter of time before consoles play together, and pcs and console play together. its going to start a much bigger war of console VS PC but if anything thats a good thing for producers. MMOs are loved by probably most gamers, if u think about it most games are going mmo style, BF4 is getting more and more players in each game its only a matter of time before the game turns into a massive battlefield. mmorpgs will not fade as long as there are RPG fans, all of my friends love rpgs and i think within time they will love games like WoW and SWTOR just dont understand that these games are 'hard' theyre just time consuming

couldnt get G2A to load up, went on amazon and can get Lich king, mists of pandaria and cataclysm for 25$ would that be a fair price? i dont mind spending that but wish they all came with 1 month of sub

Instead of using the disks you bought, you should download the full game from the account page on battle.net. It's the full game. All you pay for is the licence. I would try using the key with your battle chest and see if it gives you the new battle chest that includes the base game and the first 3 expansions (and eventually all 4 after the new expansion releases).

As for a class to play, as @Fate said, Warlock is the class you're looking for.

Also, as an aside, I've noticed those that played and quit WoW early, that is to say quit in vanilla or BC, sometimes WotLK, tend to say they're dumbing the game down. On the other hand those that have played WoW consistently for the vast majority of it's lifespan (5+ years) say it's getting less tedious and user friendly. It's the same thing, but different ways of looking at it. I, personally, believe that later. Just an observation.

Have you tried Neverwinter Online? I personally can't stand WoW, the mechanics are too old, and it feels so outdated.

Unless you know you have an addictive personality, there's no reason not to try it. You can play up to level 20 for free. 20 levels isn't much but should give you an ok idea of how the game is. You might as well.

If you like endgame raiding, then you might as well try WoW. @Fulgrim has no idea what he's talking about, High-end raiding (Heroic, soon to be Mythic) is still as challenging as ever, arguably harder than ever before to be honest. He probably jumped into tourist mode with some randoms, killed some bosses and equates that with an actual "end-game".

It might take a while to get to end-game though, level to 90 (or boost), jump into tourist mode to get some shitty gear, then move onto flex, and then you can look for a guild that just runs normal modes. You won't be doing Heroic raiding for a while, unless you excel at the class/role you play with proof like combat logs to back it up, high end guilds won't even think about taking you on with almost no experience.

Heroic gear in a few weeks, suuuure. But about the dumbing down, i think it's needed. WoW is still super complicated from an outsiders perspective, and theres still parts of it i don't fully understand still after nearly a year.

Graphics shouldn't be a deciding factor. And WoW is designed to run on any potato anyway. But yes, WoD visual revamp will help alot with people saying "Ewww WoW graphics"

WoW is way too easy mate, learning some stats and how much you need is not hard, just simple math which other people have already calculated for you, and the value can be found by a quick google search. There are plenty guides out there to give you all the info.

Top kek. I used to be in the top raiding guild on Runetotem (EU) until i quit, and cleared all vanilla + TBC content, including Sunwell. (and ICC)  Comparing how the game is now, to how it used to be - you now get everything handed to you on a silver platter.

I do know what i am talking about, i've wasted ~5 years on that game.

You can't compare them though, you haven't done any heroic current content since WotLK. Heroic bosses are immensely complex compared the basic shit you had to do in Vanilla/TBC.

And what do you get handed to you on a silver platter exactly? Some shitty raid finder gear is about it. In WoD they're making the raid finder sets look comparable to greens (http://www.mmo-champion.com/content/3940-Warlords-of-Draenor-Raid-Finder-Armor-Sets-Draenei-Guard-Armor-Set-Blue-Tweets-Art) and even giving the Mythic raiders their own tier sets.
