Found this cheap laptop that fit in my budget. Looks pretty okay

I found this laptop for quite cheap. An ASUS one.

The specs are:

i5 2400U 1.6ghz

4GB RAM

500GB HDD

Nvidia 820M 2GB.

Off the bat you can see that they HAVE sacrificed the processor for the GPU. I wanna ask if it will run Minecraft,TF2,CS:GO and GTA IV.

And IF possible, watch dogs at medium 1336x768 or 1280x720 and maybe the new gta v port coming out on the same settings.

I have school to deal with so if anything I'll be playing light. But it running watch dogs would be a nice touch :)

So what do you all think? Hope it runs, best laptop I've found so far (In India)

HP Pavilion p007tx (i5 4210u, gt840m, 8GB DDR3 memory and a 1 TB HDD that makes cool sounds when booting up)

Since my laptop can't run modern games too well I use a PS4

Don't know about the 820M, but as far as the NVidia naming scheme goes it doesn't look like it's even gonna play Minecraft.

Seriously though, I have no idea hat Nvidia thinks they're doing, you need at least a 745M to play MC at 60 fps

It will definetly play minecraft at that resolutions, you could max out minecraft just because it has a dedicated gpu and minecraft needs barely any gpu power, cs go would be fine, but I wouldn't play watch dogs as it isn't very well optimised for PC, you could probably play the gta v port on low with decent fps aswell

gtaiv MIGHT run well, its very poorly optimized for pc. i dont even get a steady 60fps

Alright thanks :)

Would W_D run? I know it seems like a pipe dream but maybe medium 1280x720 or 1360x786?

Thanks!

much like gta4, WD is unoptimized poop lol, you might be able to get a good framerate on lowest settings at 720p, but i really have no idea

But how's the laptop in general? It's quite cheap at my local retailer so I'm seriously considering picking it up.

Sound quality is good and it's quite cool.

edit: Watch dogs ran quite good with these specs (at 720p low)

CPU: Intel Core i5 2430m @ 2.4 GHz

GPU: Nvidia GT 540M

RAM: 8GB @1333 MHz

Apart from RAM the specs are quite close :) Maybe even a bit better

Can't you find something with a better GPU because that is bareley an improvement over the igpu. I would go at least 740m or 650m.

Main PC:

ASUS F1A55-M LX, AMD A6-3500, (2x2)gb Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3 1600mhz, Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm,
Corsair CX430M, Cooler Master Elite 343, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Netbook:

Lenovo Ideapad S10-2, Intel Atom N280, (1x1)gb DDR2 667mhz, WD Scorpio Blue 250gb 5400rpm, Zorin OS 9 Lite

how much is it?

It is around 716$ (I live in India so it's 43k here, may not look cheap in the United States but it's quite good a price here)

I looked up the specs and the 820m is the same amount of cores as the old 540m I had and it could not run Saints Row 3 on low. So this computer would not work for the games you say you want to play besides minecraft. I would try to get one with a 840m or 850m in it and drop the cpu down to a i3, pentium or amd cpu if needed.

Another option is if a desktop is possible is maybe a used machine and put in a nvidia GTX 750 or 750ti in it. This is what I did, My work upgrade a ton of people to laptops and the old desktop were just collecting dust in a storage room. Took a sandy bridge i3 machine with a 300watt power supply, put in 750ti and playing at 1080p.

I'd say yes. At low resolutions your more CPU bound than gpu.....so theoretically at 720p a CPU is much more important.

But I'd definitely try and upgrade to 8gb down the road.

/could be wrong....so take that with a grain of salt.

it got 22-50fps at medium 1336x768 (with 8gb ram)

It should run well at 1336x768 low or 720p medium

Going by this list which is a good high level overview of laptop graphics cards, the new laptop gpu is about that same performance as the last one you posted. The newer laptop you posted does have a better cpu tho.

I put my 540m I had in there also, which could not play saint's row 3, another open world game, I also put the 860m in there which is about the same as the 750Ti on the desktop. So you can use it as a point of reference.

Alright. I saw some gameplay of the original laptop I posted (but an older one with a 3rd gen i3u) and it ran games quite good.

If a 3rd gen low end processor can run bf4 I can run it too (the GPU he was testing it with was a 720 but its the same as the 820)

You can try it but just telling you from personal experience with the 540m both saint row 3, wildstar were unplayable at 720p on low. And the 820m is just a rebrand of the 540m running slightly faster clock speeds.

Are you buying these from a local person or a website. If you have to choose between skimping on your cpu or gpu a bit when it comes to gaming skimp on the cpu. The GPU is so much more important.

I would say the 840m is the bare min I would go with for gaming. It has 384 cores instead of 96 that the 820m does. The 850m for reference has 640 cores.
